The Onion sells a tshirt that says "The sports team from my area is better than the sports team from your area"

That pretty much sums the whole 'loyalty' thing up.

The sports team from my area is better than the spots team from your area, though. I´m a Yankees fan, but I make up for it by rooting for the Knicks.

Hometown pride is nothing to sneeze at, IMO. If nothing else, sports allow drunken men to agree with each other, instead of fighting and commiting random property damage. Guys are more likely to respond favorably to a stranger who supports their team, regardless of race, creed or gender, and a sports team is a far better unifier than a political or religious credo.
