When I was growing up in Lincolnshire, my dad worked out on a North Sea gas rig. The village hadn't been connected to the gas supply, even though the 48" pipeline passed 200 yards from the south end of it.

With only 42 people in the village, British Gas (now Centrica) said it wasn’t worth putting a spur and pressure reduction kiosk in.
