My mom had a stroke probably from being dehydrated. She has 3.5 cups of liquid a day if left to her own devices. Is not enough.

No that isn't. My old man is the opposite... fluid retention so they're like please go easy on the tea especially with that evening can of beer.

My father-in-law had a stroke a few years ago. He hardly drinks more than a few cups of coffee a day

Where would I get that from? He used to have an asparagus bed and there's plenty of nettles around the corner?

Haven’t they stated recently that the 2 litres thing is not scientific and a random number quoted from a really old study and it included moisture from food

Dont know, but the hospital advised on at least 2 litres. We were given 1 litre drinking bottles and they kept checking how much we had drunk

Apparently tea and coffee can dehydrate you due to the caffeine and doesnt count towards water intake. Best is plain water or mixed with a squash

That’s also not true - you take in much more liquid from drinking tea and coffee than the diuretic effect of them.

A prime example of why the NHS is so screwed up. Best practice is not shared. No-blame reviews of accidents (like the airline industry) are not done. And it all comes down to how good your individual doctor and nurses are and obviously that can vary massively.

They were very hot on educating us about spinal injury, bowels and bladder, pressure sores and skin condition, spasms and spasticity, and how to keep ourselves as healthy and mobile as possible.

Could also possibly be due to a lot of people with spinal injury have problems with bladder control due to lose of feelings etc. Im very lucky in that I never lost control of bladder or bowel with my injury, just a lower flow rate but thats a different story with its own problems lol
