Are you a "performative" writer?

Exactly one person in my life knows I write this type of erotica. She's been fairly supportive, though the amount of "So, you're a furry? No? You're sure? But what about-" for the first few days was exhausting.

The outfits are uncomfy.

And then literally this weekend (two months into the whole she knows I write anthro erotica thing) she asked me, "So, would you like having sex with a furry?"

I mean...
At the very least, you are furry-curious, right? Right?

I once knew a guy who liked to dress in fursuits and go to furry raves, but he said he wasn't a furry because he didn't have a fursona, so...

It's entirely possible I'm a furry, but the animal I like to dress up as is human. It would explain a lot.

The definition varies quite literally from person to person, and it really just boils down to whether or not you identify as a furry.

I personally, really enjoy furry art and stories, but I don't have a fursona so I also wouldn't say that I'm a furry. Although, other people would.

It's a very confusing term.

I'm definitely not an actual fur. No desire to dress up, no fursona. I just really enjoy non-human erotica for a lot of complicated reasons that I slowly pieced together over the years of heavy self-psychoanalysis.

That said, I still use "furry" as a tag, because in anthro terms it refers to furred anthros, probably because there's a lot of overlap between actual furs and people who enjoy anthro erotica and it's a pretty simple, easy classification.

Also, actual answer to original question:
Nope. I wrote because my brain screamed at me until the words bled out through my fingers. I also wrote incredibly strange, esoteric stuff before I stopped writing then pivoted here to get back on my feet. Stuff most people squint at me funny when I talk about. It has helped me attract exactly 0 humans, but repel a near uncountable number of them.

Me: "Hey, so I'm writing a book."
Them: "Oh, cool! What's it about?"
Me: "How do you feel about quantum spacetime entities and the nature of consciousness?"
Them: *hat slowly floats to their now-unoccupied seat*

I was reading an article in USA Today, entitled,"Men are picking up 'attraction hobbies' to get dates. Does it work?"
I really don't feel like "men take up an activity to get chicks" is newsworthy in any way.

I also feel like "performative" is an epithet that men who aren't good at picking activities to get chicks apply to men who are good at it (which largely means it's a complaint the sort of cunt who blathers about being an "alpha male" has about dudes who can read). No shade to the OP.

We should conduct an experiment on this. Everybody sign up for an online dating service, and in your profile mention that you write erotic stories online. See how you do.

I have a hunch about how "I write stories about mom-son incest at Literotica" will impact my dating success.
Judging by the readership numbers of I/T, this might make you wildly popular...

It might help if your mom joined the dating service, too. I mean…😬😜🤭

Interesting, I would see it as the reverse - the ones who aren't good at it are the performative ones while the ones who are good at it are good at it because there's some sincerity and authenticity in their involvement in the activities they pick.

Both can be true. The two of you are talking about an idiosyncratic usage of the same word to mean two different things by two disjoint (albeit fuzzy) sets of people.

As a woman, when I show people my writing/art work they jump to one of two conclusions - either it's autobiographical in nature or two, too off the wall for them. YMMV

I was trying to figure out a way of saying something similar, but you said it well so I'll just say, "Yep."

I write primarily in service to art; secondarily because I know my stories have helped people. I'm not looking to attract anyone. It has happened. Kinda fun, kinda tragic. Someday I'll write about it 🤭
