*shrugs* I'm neither for nor against the labels themselves, but I will say that if they are used Bisexual needs to be a choice as well. I am tired of Straight people AND Gay people telling me to stop straddling the fence and either 'come out of the closet' or (since I started dating my darling who is female they started this one) stop pretending to be other then straight. -_- idiots, people only see/hear what they like and ignore all else....

Yes I feel it's a spectrum, I used to argue that fact a couple months ago before I left for the summer.

Amen. When I lived in Dallas in the 90's, the feeling that seemed to dominate the gay and lesbian community was that if you walked like a duck and talked like a duck, you were a DUCK! What the !@$% does that mean? I think people want to make things black and white so they can understand the world better. I think I remember some professor telling me there is an name for that , an actual studied human response. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Well, I digress. My point is, those of us who are on a "spectrum" of sorts are more accepted now than we were 10-15 years ago. Just my opinion.

good posts from both of you~especially that there isn't an easy answer to this. i go by on what i see around me. i've always felt that we know the truths to our sexuality wether we admit it or not and i see a lot of men who are bisexual and gay leading very unhappy lives pretending they aren't mostly out of fear of what would happen to them if the "truth" were to come out.

Yeah hon, I agree, but you know, it's not only kind of sad, it's very sad. In fact, aside from maybe losing my son, I can't imagine something more sad (or ironic) than being afraid of the truth.

I don't really like the word sexual preference because I believe that you are born gay, straight, or bi. I'm a gay man and I've wondered sometimes what sex with a woman would be like but I know I'm gay because there's no sexual tension there between me and a woman. I know a lot of bi people who have a preference towards one gender over another but they are still bi no matter what because there is still sexual tension there between both genders. What I basically believe is that you can choose who you want to be with but you can't choose who you are sexually attracted to.

my question is this.....

society likes to use the terms "gay" and "straight." meaning there are just 2 categories.

is that actually the case, or is it a continuous spectrum. meaning that some people are 80% straight, 74% straight, 95% gay, 97% straight, etc.

In my oppinion, just my little 2 cents. Labels are used simply because we're all lazy and it's easier.

Absolutely. Although sometimes it's not laziness, it's saving time! It's easier to just say how you identify rather than going through a long explanation of your entire sexual history. A lot of people decry labels, but they are damn convenient.

The problem with the label "BI" is that nobody believes you. Women think you are experimenting. Men think you are in denial.
I prefer the label "greedy".
