Ask the Demon

Dear Vandy-San,

Is it true that Head and Shoulder's Shampoo actually doesn't get rid of dandruff, but instead; gives you more if you stop using it after a certain amount of time? From what I was told, H&S leaves a sticky goop on your scalp which washes away after so many washes and ends up drying your scalp, hence; making your scalp more prone to flaking.

Is this true or not?

Oh Lady Reiha spotting.

Dear Demon,

Why are old movies so much better?

~LA

You forgot the word "usually" in that sentence.

Ever seen the Captain America movie? All I'm sayin'.

The reason is that back then, they weren't trying to imitate old movies. There weren't any. Also, the world and industry were a very pair of animals place than they are today. Back then, they really didn't have censors. They didn't need any. Not because they weren't making smut, don't get me wrong, because they were SO MAKING SMUT half of the time. But they were doing it with one word in mind as they did so.

Art.

Don't just make a movie, don't just paint a picture, don't just tell a story. Say something. And say it beautifully. It doesn't have to be profound, just make it moving. Nowadays, half of the art produced is there for no reason but to offend the censors. Or someone. We've forgotten why we offend people. What the purpose is. Offending someone on purpose is supposed to be a form of social shock therapy. The only thing most people can catch of that sentence is the shock, not the therapeutic intent. That, and so many movies are being made just to make something look foolish. Comedy is one thing, but 2 hours of lampooning pop culture without any hint of what might be a better culture is pointless. This is why to this day I refuse to see any of the Scary Movie series. Not Another Teen Movie was bad enough.

A note for some of my detractors: grotesquery can be beautiful. The pain is the point. Fight Club was social commentary at it's best. It showed a possible solution to a very real problem facing the modern American male, but it also showed what happens when a good thing goes too far. Most of Palahniuk's work is like that. Dee Snyder's Strangeland was a perfect model of when people can't leave well enough alone and taught the lesson I've only hinted at with my online persona: If you call something a monster long enough, sooner or later that thing will become a monster. It's like Neitzsche's warning, but inverted. Do not simply discount that which you find disgusting. Ask yourself why it is so disturbing and you may find truth in it's purest form. This is the essence of art.

The active ingredient in Head & Shoulders Dandruff Shampoo is zinc pirythione, an antifungal compound. This is the same stuff used in most anti-mold house paints, just in smaller doses in the shampoos. This means that the kind of dandruff H&S is actually treating is the kind caused by dermatitis of the scalp involving a fungus not unlike athlete's foot.

To answer your question, no, the way you explained this is untrue. It does not leave a sticky goop, I'm guessing you mean as a protective barrier keeping the moisture in. If anything, it does the opposite. It dries out the scalp while medicating to get rid of the underlying cause of the flaking. Unfortunately, as with most anti-biotic treatments, if you stop before the treatment has run it's course or without adhering to a strict schedule, the problem will persist, and likely with a resistance to the treatment in question.

Now, this is where the weird rules start to come in, and this is also conjecture and third-hand knowledge, so don't quote me on anything that follows. The preceding, however, I will stand by as currently understood truth.

The skin on top of one's head is eight kinds of weird. Without including certain surgical options, all treatments for baldness must be repeated constantly or their effects will begin to reverse. I would assume that this rule can carry over into other scalp treatments. My father, for one, used Selsun Blue and Neutrogena T-gel for as long as I was using a shower in the same house with him. His dandruff was pretty bad, needless to say, and to my knowledge, he still uses the same hair care products to this day. If he were to stop, I shudder to think how bad it would get. In essence, most scalp treatments need to be kept up and constant, or else the condition will return. Whoever is telling you that stopping usage of the shampoo will bring the condition back worse seems to be assuming that the condition can be cured at all. Dandruff is a condition that every person I've ever met who had it has dealt with all their adolescent and adult lives, regardless of the options they attempt. Hair conditions don't go away, and if you stave them off for a while, they will com back with a vengeance. Plain and simple.

Dear Demon... last night i had a dream in which Kenny Chesney stayed at my house and i had sex with him.. and he was telling me where he lived... because of this i woke up quite confused... as i normally dream of dark and depraved things... ( and yes i know you're usually in my dreams too..) .. why in the blue hell did my brain come up with this?? is it because i've got without sex for so long? or is it something else ?

As someone who believes in magic, reincarnation, quantum physics, and many other concepts discussed in sci-fi and fantasy forums, I still have to say that dream interpretation is one of the biggest wastes of time ever. I'm not saying that dreams mean nothing, but they obey different rules. The rules for dreams are so different, in fact, that they may as well not follow any rules at all. Because of this, there is no clear way to interpret a dream. For all I know, that dream is an internal interpretation of your need for cheese fries on every second Thursday of the month. There is no rhyme or reason to dreams 99% of the time. Then there are those times that the dream just screams at you, and if this were one of those, you wouldn't need me to interpret it for you. Unfortunately, kiddo, this is one of those times that I have to concede failure and say what I hate saying: I have no clue. Sorry.

This is not the place to ask such questions. Send me a pm.

Dear Daemon,

This is going to seem like a silly question, but can you really smoke and not inhale? I know someone once said he did... but can you?

As any cigar smoker will tell you, yes. You can smoke without inhaling. It doesn't do as much good, since the only absorption of the good stuff is coming through the blood vessels under your tongue, but it still works. The effect is not only noticeable with cigars, but inhaling cigar smoke isn't really that bright of an idea anyhow. Cigarettes, well...I've heard both claims: effectiveness and non effectiveness. It really just depends on who you talk to. As for other substances I likely don't have to name, well, let's just say second hand smoke works. You don't even have to be smoking to inhale.

Wtf happened to my baby?

I was on my darling pc last night and everything worked beautifully. However when I logged on this afternoon half of my files and programs were gone. What happened?

*sniffles*

Um...I have no idea. My best explanation on that one is you have a ninja infestation. And I'm sorry, there is nothing you can do about that. They don't sell ninjacide at WalMart anymore, ever sine their Lawn & Garden director got a severed head on his desk with the note pinned to it telling him to remove the product.

Nobody knows where it came from, and nobody who has any real power over the situation has the balls to ask, but we all know anyhow. Oh yes...we know all too well.

If there is any more information you have on the subject, that might help, like what files are missing, what kind of security you have set up on the machine, including antivirus software and locked doors, both. Remember, the problem may not be technological issues, especially if there is someone without scruples in the vicinity.

It has everyone stumped. Things have appeared on my pc that haven't been there since 2006 when I first got it. Images and files I have deleated a long time ago have popped up.

Seems somehow my files have been corrupted and are now hiding. Although no one can tell me why. Shell configuration sucks *huge sniffles*

And yes the mini rapist is still running amuck...damn dentist anyhow.

The only two explanations I can think of are these:

1 - You somehow managed to do a system restore to back in the day. This makes little sense, because system restore points are set every few days or so and shuffled away just as often when they go out of date. It's possible, but incredibly unlikely that this happened.

2 - When you delete a program off of your hard drive, you don't actually delete it. You tag the data as safe to be overwritten. Until it actually gets overwritten, it's still there. You managed to hunt down some virus that caused your hard drive to uncover some files and restore them to full non-overwrite status, while turning some of the ones that were at full status to become "deleted". What's messed up about viruses that actually make changes that are saved to the hard drive is that reversing the damage is a bit of a chore. Nine times out of ten, you can't simply reverse the damage with an anti virus program. However, if you want to do a system restore back to the point before this crap started happening, I would highly suggest it. Maybe that will fix things.

Other than that, I don't really know what to tell you. Basically, that is freakin' weird.

Do you wish to know the really freakin weird part? System restore doesn't work, nor does safe mode, lol. Its like factory settings with a smidge of aim, yahoo, itunes and this weird tax file that appeared. I'm thinking that my dear baby will be visiting a computer repair man soon so that the files can be uncorrupted and unhidden.

Btw, the filling? Still killing me and tomorrow I'm on the hunt for a second opinion. One cannot live alone on advil, benadryl and orjel~

I wholly support both decisions. I told you to get a second opinion sooner.

Silly.

*blushes* I know, I know. He filed down two teeth and now my bite is off. I swear that dentist is like a mechanic, you go to him and suddenly another thing is off and so it continues.

Care to explain to me why you remind me of Sweeny Toddy? :p

Uhhh...because I'm a sick devious bastard with a few women that would help me dispose of bodies if I asked nice enough at my disposal? I dunno.

Dear Vandal,

Is there a reason you aren't answering the other question about which came first?

Also, besides fly strips, what's a good way to get rid of annoying gnat/fly thingies?
