Atlantic Hurricanes

Oh dear God, looks like it is projected to hit southeastern NC, already hurt by Matthew. This area is the poorest part of NC and gets flooded very easily.

Maybe you could hop, skip, and jump, on down there and help fill sand bags and defeat that bigoted storm.

Florence was an unusual hurricane in many respects— not least of which is that it was the first hurricane since 1851 to follow the track which it did.

Much like Hurricane Isabel's effects on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay (in 2003), Florence's counter-clockwise winds funneled water into North Carolina's sounds and rivers.

Remembering Hurricane Camille In Nelson County, Virginia

"1969 was a remarkable year. Remembered as the year when man first stepped on the moon, and the year of the first Woodstock Festival, it was also the year when a major hurricane -- Hurricane Camille -- struck the United States.

Hurricane Camille wreaked havoc along the coastline of the Gulf states from New Orleans to Florida; and as far inland as the mid-Atlantic, including several parts of Virginia. With widespread flooding, extreme storm surges, record rainfall, and widespread destruction, several hundreds of lives were lost, and billions of dollars in damage occurred, making it one of the most devastating hurricanes to hit the United States...

...After Hurricane Camille, the landscape had changed so much that topographical maps were obsolete. To this day, hillsides still remain bare with exposed rock where mudslides once ravaged and stripped the lush green forest away. Damage totalled between 113-140 million dollars as the entire expanse of central Virginia was declared a disaster area. The flooding from the rain swept away miles of road, over 200 bridges, and over 900 buildings. A total of 123 people lost their lives and 37 people were never found; most of these deaths occurred due to mud. The rainfall tripled the state's record, and has not been broken since.

Nelson County, Virginia will forever bear the topographic scars from the unprecedented rain and it will always remember those who were fatally lost to Camille... "

This retrospective was generated by NWS Student Volunteer [name redacted] to revisit the unusually catastrophic storm that is Hurricane Camille. In tribute to all lives affected and lost in the destruction of August 1969.
