Back to Senate

I think that all this shows for McCain is that he can't campaign AND make tough decisions. He doesn't want to face Obama about the issue in a debate because he knows that he doesn't really know what's going on. This decision shows JUST HOW MUCH he has no clue. He has no say on the bill except his final vote. He's not on the committee, and he knows little of economics (as shown by his earlier statements).

This IS a serious issue, but do we expect the President of the United States to STOP EVERYTHING so he can make an important decision? I imagine a Pres would have to keep doing his job, AND make important decisions simultaneously. Welcome to the job Mr. McCain.

(I believe Obama said something to this effect earlier in the day, too)

JMHO

I think it would be great to see the senators going back to Washington to work on a non-partisan solution. I mean they're getting paid $160,000 a year to be senators....not getting paid $160,000 a year to run for president.

I honestly think these two men could set an example by focusing on the countries needs first and not their own needs. I have alot of issues with both men, and yet I have alot of respect for both men. I think bothof them are men of honor.

Plus...it would be a nice break from all the mud-slinging going on on both sides.

Good points. I concur, except - I kinda enjoy the mudslinging. :D

All of the rationalizations are fun, but that doesn't motivate the electorate all that much. I think it was a brilliant move that grabbed the electorate with an "Oh yeah, stoppin' yappin and doin' the work we're already paying him for" moment when they are really, really fed up with the road campaigning anyway. And, as a few others have mentioned, it flips everything upside down and gets him out of some corners. These are the kinds of radical moves that turn corners in election campaigns. His campaign is doing pretty well in putting the Obama people on the defensive and surprising them.

This is not a "that's my man," comment. I'm not voting for any Republicans this year. I just think it's a very clever PR knockdown punch (not necessarily knock out, of course--and there might be a clever and effective rejoinder to it. Will just have to see.)

This is interesting.

And news flash, Senators don't have any problems both campaigning and "making tough decisions" in the Senate at the same time. Even when they are in Washington, they have staffs that get everything together based on knowing the Senator and all of the forces forming her/his positions. If the Senator didn't have to put face time on casting votes, the Senate could run without them. (And there's far more going on in Senate business--much of it entirely by staffs--than Senators sitting on committees or voting on bills.) Senatorial Washington staffs certainly can work without them being present. (They are, in fact, never not spending a lot of time out of Washington campaigning--and other things.)

Hmm...Presidential announcement. Looks like back to the Whitehouse instead.

No, if I want to watch tragedy, I prefer Hamlet; there are fewer bodies onstage at the end.

I certainly appreciate your point. I was referring strictly to the campaign jockeying and grandstanding, not the economic issues we have to face.

Don't tell people THAT! They think these government folk make all those decisions single-handedly after reading MOUNTAINS of legislative and legal paperwork.

I think this is just a big show. As jomar noted. Theatrics.

Suck it up. Address the issues before the American people. PROVE your head isn't stuck up in your ass and you even sort-of know a teensy weensy bit about how the stock market works.

Sorry. Raving here. Had a pissy day.

I'm not saying it isn't theatrics. I'm saying it is the stuff that the electorate at large just eats up. In that, it's brilliant. Just watch for the McCain bounce in the polls (unless the Obama people can come up with a counterpunch that will trump it with the electorate).

No you're right. I guess what dissappoints me is that people actually BELIEVE that he's doing something positive here. They think that this decision shows how "dedicated" he is. And yet, if you've been following him and the campaign with any responsibility, you'd know that he's not on the committee, he knows little about economics, and he's voted for deregulation for YEARS!

Plus... it's bailing him out of a debate he knows he's outmatched for, but people are foolish enough to think this is him being honorable.

You're right. It makes him look good and keeps him out of a situation that would make him look bad. And most voters have no fucking clue.

:(

I think it's making McCain look like an idiot, frankly.

Besides, I want my damned debate on Friday! I bought the good popcorn and everything! :D

Course you're only looking for what makes your candidate look good--which means diddlysquat in terms of manipulating the electorate.

But it looks like you'll get your debate. John McCain just might not be there. That could be very interesting.

Shouldn't you be off designing books covers or something?

SELENA

You need a life if you plan to watch Obama and McCain talk shit for 2 hours.

The whole charade is an infomerical.

It does have the ring of a sound bite move. Too bad that kind of stuff works these days; people don't take time for the background.

He's not my candidate - he's the lesser of two evils.

We'll see if McCain will be there. Either way, it will be interesting.

And shouldn't YOU be writing? :p

Other than I think SK has a life (two, actually :)) I concur. I can hardly force myself to watch more than a few minutes of that tripe. I'm much more interestied in the reactions of others.

I guess I'm flip side. To me, they are both better than the existing evil.

I'm editing--and watching "America Has Talent" finals at the same time. Trained as a juggler. Why, are you ready for another one? (You don't believe I have another couple ready?)

As you know quite well, the electorate hasn't been following him for years. They know he was a war hero; they know some mean guys said some lies about him.

These things they know, just like they know that Jesus Loves The Little Children.

And these are the same people who applaud any pol who shows up for a photo op at the scene of any disaster.

And upon their shoulders rests the fate of the Presidency.

Sigh. Maybe I should just shut my mouth and write.

How are you, Stella? Long time no speak.

Well I'd agree with the former, certainly. But I still have to choose between the two of them. *sigh*

I'm always ready for another one! :D I actually finally finished one of my own! (And yeah yeah, I have no doubt you have a stash of extras shoved into your virtual drawers!)

I do find it very amusing that you watch America's Got Talent, though. And even more amusing that you had to correct their title. LOL
