banning single-use plastics

good. we don't need them and plastic has got into everything, the water, the food-chain, people... i really don't like eating and drinking out of plastic and styrofoam; give me glass and china any day. plastic tastes like chemicals.

Good.
They also need to ban all the glitzy junk food wrapping.
I remember a time when food items came in more plain, cheaper wrappings. And people were thinner then.

More government control over what we can do..

Yes, what a good idea. Let's have our wise leaders decide for us dumb folks what we can and can not do. Ban plastic! Ban free speech! Ban guns! Give more power to the people that know what is best for all of us. The wise leaders that have fashioned the world into such a wonderful place.

Let's ban quicksand. Please join forces and HELP STAMP OUT QUICKSAND!!! Or we will all be swallowed alive!

This is probably not worth the inconvenience to Canadian citizens.

Canada already does a good job with its solid waste. Most of the plastics in the oceans come from Asia.

A and W has as already replaced single use plastics up here. They use a heavily wax coated paper to make the straws. A and W is the only fast food chain I infrequently visit. Nothing to develop, already done. Say what you want about Trudeau but Scheer is a moronic fucktard, look up his fiscal management ideas, also a white supremacist.

Waxed paper is a non-recyclable product. Nor is it quickly biodegradable. It's actually worse than plastic because you have to cut down trees to make it.

(waiting diligently for someone to come along and say that you can make it from recycled paper.)

You do realize that EVERY "Hefty trash bag" is single use, right?

As is every disposable diaper.

As is... well hopefully you get the point.

Yes I fully well realize that we as a society and economy are pretty much completely dependent upon shitting where we eat - so to speak.

I also realize that it's going to bite us in the butt - hard - if we don't figure this out.

You seem to think this is negotiable. If we don't resolve this it will be resolved for us - and not by the government - in a very nonconsensual manner.

So, a hero cookie for going back to paper straws, no matter how heavily coated in non biodegradable chemicals and Mr Dressup who bought an oil pipeline for the country has nice hair and the budget will balance its self

It's also fair to point out the limits to the malleability of human behavior. Folks respond to law and economic incentive differently than they do whatever is nonobligatory.

And it's not like there aren't already lots of alternatives to single-use plastics out there. It's more a question of better and worse options. I was just reading that some plastics labeled biodegradable require industrial reprocessing. Not exactly compost-friendly.

Get rid of the water bottles, anything less than a 10 litre refillable container is illegal

A couple of things.

First, plastics are made from oil, so near term, given that most plastics in North America are neither properly sorted or cleaned for recycling, high temp incineration for energy/heat is the most practical alternative end of life use.

In Europe, recycling is more sophisticated and has better buy-in from consumers...multibins exist in most homes for the different kinds of plastics (commonly numbered 1-7) and consumers clean them before disposal.

Second, the one-time plastics ought to be restricted to polyethylenes, low density and high density. Why? PET, ABS and the other common plastics fuck everything up when mixed with LDPE and HDPE.

(that's why garbage bags were always black, btw...the black dye covers up all the recycled colors in the donor plastics)

For food and product safety reasons, plastics are likely going to be around for another 50-100 years, so the real answer is limiting them to recoverable uses and training consumers to properly sort and clean...or just burn the shit and keep being wasteful consumers.

Wow. A coherent post without the mention of Luk. Kudos, oralasscancer!

No, you ascribe that to me because you never bothered to ask me what I think are viable options.

Recycling works, it's just not economically feasible in the marketplaces where the most "waste product" is produced by the consumer. Solve that financial equation and you can establish a system whereby plastic waste is reduced until it's eliminated.

Please note that "government incentives" in recycling have not worked in creating a stable/viable industry. Thus, more programs attempting to replicate what has already been tried by the government, and which didn't work, are doomed to fail.

AFAIK, one thing that HASN'T been tried are tax incentives for businesses who recycle plastics AND for businesses which would use the recycled products to make new products.

But that's a lot harder to do than pointing the ban hammer at everyone and telling them to do what you want. Or else.

Not really. The recycling plants are basically sorting very little and trashing the rest. Pizza boxes are not supposed to go into the recycling bin but 99% of people think they do. It's shit like that. China doesn't even want our recyclables anymore because they are so contaminated.

Good point. Need to address the mammoths and large producers first.

I don't know about the best method to clean our plannet,
but equally worrisome is the global epidemy of obesity.

They say that soda drinks and junks food are the main perpetrators.
If they asked Them to regulate their plastic glitzy use, I bet impulsive bingeing and obesity rates will drop too.

Relax sparky. I said "seem".

However the reality is that you run with climate change deniers who fight any industrial accountability.

And no recycling doesn't really work.

Pop quiz: how much plastic created ends up being recycled?

(Hint: less than 10%. By any measure that is not 'working'.)

The recycling companies are choosing high value targets because they make more profit from those items.

Again, change the financial equation by making it CHEAPER to manufacture plastic products from recycled materials and consumers will vote with their wallets in the dollar store.

Sparky?

That almost sounds like a term of endearment...you are getting soft on him are you?:D:D

This is denial coupled with deflection and a bit of ascription and flaming for added flavor.

The problem ISN'T that "recycling doesn't work". It's that no one has tried to figure out how to MAKE IT WORK other than through direct government involvement.

It's the lazy man's solution - blame others and then make a law against it.

What about all the other packaging?
When I buy large things nowaday, I prefer to take them out of the case at the store because the packaging is 3 times the volume.
