Back (in the Dark Ages) when I taught English (as a second language) to inner-city kids who had been mangling it all their lives, I used to tell them:
"I before E, except after C, when it sounds like an A, and in certain other weird words... like 'weird.' But generally, I before E except after C." They still mostly didn't get it.
I find paste even more interesting.
