Night finally came, and Esperanza for once found it relatively easy to fall asleep. The tone of her unhappiness was different, though she couldn't say if it was for the better or worse. It seemed to hurt less. She didn't feel like she was a broken pencil away from tears at any given moment, which was nice, but the nothing that had come in place of that raw misery was so... nothing. It was like her soul was going numb.
Somewhere she'd read that when a person is in the final stages of freezing to death, they feel very comfortable and tired. It felt a little like she imagined that would feel. She knew she wasn't freezing, literally, but the cessation of a deep pain and replacement by no feeling at all seemed less like she was getting better and more like she was slipping into something worse.
There had been that dream, though. That thing had said it could help.
It was just a dream, but on some strange level, she believed it. It could help. So she got ready for bed, put on her sleep tee, and went to sleep. And almost immediately, she felt herself in that empty darkness.
"Hello?" she said, and her voice sounded so small compared to what she remembered.
