Bugs in the Literotica Program itself.

They certainly have messed around with the forum software, and not in a good way either.
What do you reckon has gone backwards with the Forum update?

I only see pluses - mainly, complete invisibility of those I have on Ignore. The new software hides all original posts, and no longer quotes the text of an original post if someone else reposts it. Even so, it's always obvious when they play the same record, but now I don't have to hear it.

What I've noticed is that, when posting a reply to someone, if one takes too long in writing it, there may be an error message near the top that says to try again later. I really should copy down the exact wording. Also, I haven't noticed the exact amount of time for this to appear - it appears to be around five minutes or so (and sometimes it does take a while to write a long reply).

Then, if I just close the thread and open it again, I'll find that about half the reply was indeed posted. A couple of times, it was the entire reply. When this first started, I would copy the reply into Word just so I would have it. (The reply was visible; it just wasn't possible to post it with that error message up there.)

By the way, in over four years I've never put a single person on an ignore list. There just hasn't been anybody who bugged me that much.

I've not experienced that, but then I don't linger over my replies.

From what I've seen, the forum-software update, in addition to being necessary on the technical side because the site could no longer support the older software, has been a badly needed drag into the 21st century for this clunky old forum. I do miss the old interface, in the same way I miss the endearing-but-asbestos-infested building I used to work in, but to claim the old interface was "better" just doesn't hold water to me.

As a member of several online fora, I've staggered through a number of software updates on several sites. A loud minority ALWAYS hates it until they get used to it.

I don't hate it, but it's a bit annoying at times. Sometimes I do linger over replies, and that's when it happens.

To digress a bit. It's expensive, but asbestos can be removed from an old building with historical significance. New York has a huge number of landmarked buildings, and I'm sure they've had asbestos removed from many of them. The first four buildings in this photo are landmarked. They started out as department stores, became warehouses later on, and now they're back to retailing (and office) uses.

I've hit that problem, but I occasionally had similar problems with the old forum software too. I got in the habit of copying my text before hitting the post button, just in case.

It seems that the error message at the top is new. A while ago Outlook changed their email system so that a draft is saved every, maybe two minutes - or maybe even less. Too many people were banging along with long messages and then they'd lose them if something went wrong. Usually, it would be something like turning the program off by accident.

Likewise. Like hitting Save every time I stop to think, when working on any document. A habit I learned the hard way (just once) back in '87, when I first used WordPerfect.

I've received that error message, too. There is a save button, right up there in the right-hand corner. It flashes green occasionally, but if I'm making a long reply, I'll hit it often. That seems to work.

Good to know. Hadn't spotted that.

It can also throw a warning (not exactly an error) letting you know someone else has posted to the thread while you were busy composing.

I can’t recreate now to get the exact verbiage, but I do recall that it’s a mouthful. The time or two I saw it my first instinct was “something went wrong”, but it was a case of the software trying to be helpful and giving me the chance to load the new post(s) first. (Was it actually helpful, or just clouding the situation? Discuss.)

That's the bit that shows up in a green bar (on my device, anyway). I think it just says someone else has posted to the thread - you can click in and see the new content, then back click to your own post.

The time-out thing mentioned above is pretty random. I've had long posts go up no problems, but earlier this evening I had a short one that hiccuped - the one above, in fact, where I replied, "Likewise" to Bramble's post.

The next time I see it, I'll have to copy the wording and note the exact color. It seemed more gray than green to me. Also, it is likely that different browsers and devices pick up Lit software differently, but I'm not tech enough to know much about that topic.

In any case, the message has something to do with the amount of time spent on a reply, not the length of the text being written. As I said, I've seen worse glitches on various sites, but it is relatively new and could have been programmed better than it was.

We're talking about several different things, I think. I've not seen a time related flag specifically, just the "Oops, there seems to be a problem" flag which says try again later. That's when you can find a response, half saved.

Then there's the, "There's new content been posted, do you want to see?" flag, which is something different.

I don't see these as bugs, though, they're features of software trying to cope in a hideous multi-device context.

The first paragraph obviously is what I've seen. The second one must be the red flags (no pun intended, I assume) that appear in the blue band at the top right. I have one of those right now. "A hideous multi-device context?" I'm not a techie, but every site has to deal with that issue. Why can't this one?

I think it does deal with the issue of multi-devices okay, all things considered. Put it this way, I use a Kindle to do everything here on Lit, and to write, and it works just fine for me! Who cares about phones, lol.

I find the new forum software easy to navigate, the error messages aren't the endless revolving wheels that you usually find with timing out software, and the advisories are just that - advisories. They don't get in the way of anything.

Spell checkers can miss typos. I type "form" instead of "from" and similar issues. Because the mistake is a word, it gets through, even though it isn't the word I want. I usually catch them at the time because I know I'm a crappy typist.

I like to read my stuff out loud, because it help me to get past my confirmation bias. Sometimes my eyes read what I meant to say instead of the text that landed on the page. Of course, I don't read it out loud at the library, where I do a lot of my writing.

The fun part about writing smut is the interesting choices that pop up in autocomplete. Imagine writing a formal letter and accidently inserting cock-whore for cookies or something. I haven't had it happen, but I could see the possibility.

There's a Lit story there: "Planning the Office Potluck" (Group)

Dude sends a work email listing responsibilities:

Andy: bring sandwich fixings!
Frank: bring cock-whore!
Megan: bring salad!
Leslie: bring drinks!
Pedro: bring chips!

Frank, being new, and earnest, follows directions. Comic depravity ensues.

Twist ending: Pedro is pissy at the end when he corners the guy who sent the email. "You could have had someone bring cookies, idiot." Emailer is bemused.

I read and re-read my work (obsessively). Any time I have found a typo or other error, it existed in the source material. It was not "added" by literotica.

Moreover, I think we can all imagine that the people who run literotica, whether it is the cofounders or some minions, do so against a pressure of way too much to do, and way too little time. They are not "editing" anything that is posted in any traditional sense. They are making a quick, good faith effort to ensure that each story is legal & minimally intelligible for the language chosen at upload.

The notion that anyone is taking a sufficiently intrusive approach to actually mangle stories, while managing this overwhelming load of work, simply doesn't understand how the world works.

I noticed that the misspelled words and other errors(there are only a few) in my stories, have not been on my end.

It's from Literotica's end.

All my stories pass Microsoft Office "Editor Program" and are reviewed by my neighbor, who is a retired, published, college English Professor of almost 30 years.

Does anybody else have this problem?
I've never experienced Lit changing words. All the mistakes in my stories are also in the original file. That said, I have tried up-loading a file to Lit and have run into numerous problems with doing so. Most of them were punctuation problems, quotes showing up as other special characters and the like. At first I thought it was because I was using Wordperfect and the Lit site might not recognize those files. I bought a copy of MS Word 2019 and tried uploading files in both the older MS .doc format as well as the newer MS .docx format. It doesn't seem to matter. Any file I upload to Lit shows up as corrupt. I have no idea why. I've satisfied myself with coping and pasting the story.

Do you upload files? Maybe you're experiencing the same problem I am.

Other than poems, which I've sometimes typed right into the interface, I've never done anything but upload .doc or .docx files. They've never failed to post identically to how they look in the original file.

Which implies, obviously, that when I do type them in that original file, I use Lit-preferred formatting and spacing.

I've never experienced weird formatting issues, that I can recall. I used to submit docs in .rtf form, but now that I have a better idea of exactly what format is preferred I tend to keep my formatting extremely simple and simply attach a .doc or .docx doc, and it works just fine.

For me, the weirdest and most persistent Literotica "bug" is the way view numbers vary from one list format to the other. And it's not temporary, either--it's not a matter of one just being a bit ahead of the other. Sometimes the discrepancies are quite large, and they're permanent. Not for all stories, but for some.

So what, pray tell might that be? Is there such a thing? If so I really like to know so I can use it. I will add to my earlier post that I've also tried .RTF files and .txt files (basic windows and ASCII) without success. I thought for a while it might be on my end, but I upload .RTF and .txt files to another site without a problem. I also don't use any format or special characters that won't translate to a basic .txt file.

Type with no paragraph indents, any font, any size, two returns at the end of each paragraph. Copy and paste into the text box on the submission page, and Preview. On my device, I see the result exactly as it will be once it's published - and you can edit in that text box, to fix those last inevitable glitches.

I do my raw draft in .docx, but I don't upload that file, I always use the text box so I get the Preview. That's been foolproof for the last three years, for me.

I, however, do not copy/paste into the Lit text submission box. I simply upload. So I don't get to preview, but like I said, it's never been a problem. Italics, bold, underline, they all come out just fine.

I haven't indented a paragraph in years and I always double space between paragraphs. There is definitely something in the Lit program that does not like my uploaded files. Aw well, I've been pasting it in for years, I'll just keep doing it that way. But my problem might be the problem the OP is having too.
