I spent this spring leaning conversation analysis. One thing we did was to paintstakingly transcript recorded conversations and speeches from tape to paper.

Almost any casual impro conversation (which I assume a press Q&A can count as) will look like it's spoken by a complete rambling idiot when transcribed to text. You think most people talk in complete sentences with solid phrasing and a neat punctuation in the end? Only in poorly written movies.

i'm constantly amazed that their are minds out there sufficiently twisted that they can try to make sense of Bush's rambling lies. it's occassionally amusing, often frightening, mostly just gives me a headache. thank god we have ami to interpret for us.

For ten straight years I performed a radio talk show before a a live microphone, answering telephone calls and questions, that strangely enough make me reflect that some Lit posters must have been among them, as the questions and the rhetoric remain the same...

It is an acquired skill, I think, to be able to improvise logical answers extemporaneously without wandering or digressing to a point of losing control of the answer.

Further, to enunciate in grammatically correct style and usuage, also comes only with great experience and practice, especially on 'radio' as dead air while you think is not acceptable and the use of uh's and ah's is not recommended.

Nor does one breathe audibly enough for the microphone to pick it up, also an acquired skill.

I seldom edit my resonses here, preferring to keep to my old style...which I suppose accounts for my use of...ellipses, to note a pause, rather than other punctuation.

At any rate, I stand behind what I wrote about the President's comments.

people, even common people, talking from the heart, speaking the truth, being genuine with an audience, don't need acquired skills to not sound like an idiot. your patron saint W has never had an honest word come out of his mouth. he's fed every thought he's ever had by Karl Rove, and he repeats those lines to the best of his ability. it's worked for a long time, but they got in way over their heads in Iraq.

I think the question goes farther than "Can we Win?", She. There are a lot of questions. The questions are how did we end up in Iraq? How did the Bush Administration make the Saddam-Al Quida connection in the first place? Who thought up the WDM thing? What kind a intel was behind the African Uranium thing even though Bush was told it wasn't true? How can the Administration reject the idea there is a civil war going on when the indications are totally clear to everyone? How as the Administration gotten away with selling this country out to the Chinese and Indians to continue a war we can't win? How can the Administration expect their "Campaign of Fear" to continue forever? And how can the Republicans continue screaming about Bill Clinton's blow job and what an immoral leader he was in the face of the Foley, Abramoff etc scandals? (Kinda reminds me of the Nixon Administration when half the white house staff went to prison.)

Odd that nobody in the Administration seems to want to talk about any of these issues.

Oh please. You can't tell me you've never noticed that GWB is exceptionally, er, challenged when it comes to speaking off-script. It's not just a matter of having poor verbal skills; it's obvious that when he's on the spot and needs to come up with an original thought - or explain the thinking behind a controversial policty - he panics. Remember, he refused to appear before the 9/11 commission without Dick Cheney at his side. Either that, or Cheney refused to allow it.

To be honest - and how can I not be honest, when you're willing to show your banana - I was troubled by that phone call story. I admired the president's ability to focus; but at the same time, I couldn't help wondering where the blow job went wrong. Properly done, fellatio should turn even a brilliant mind into a dish of room-temperature pudding.
