you can get really expensive or really cheap stuff in HK, it all depends on where you go and how good you haggle.

I did not know that. But that is a good thing. It is good to visit family during the holidays.

lol, actually in HK they get 2 weeks off for new years. New Years is really great, because the celebrations are huge. They traditionally as Gusty said, last 2 weeks after. You wear new clothes, and stuff. Lots of money spent.

Young, single people tend to make out like bandits with the red packets containing money, usually given by older relatives, employers, customers, etc. I heard that in some rich families, the kids might rake in as much as US$2000 or $3000 in one Chinese New Year!

In Singapore, CNY lasts for 3 days but a lot of businesses and institutions are closed for a week.
