Hey vic, how was the movie? i really want to see it..but if it was lame..then i won't bother..i love vampires tho..so i'm sure i'll like it.

Movie was okay.

The good: Story was interesting. Seems to me it may have been a short story that was added to in order to make full blown movie story. Nice action. Kate B in leather is interesting. But then again, I have a thing for women with English/French accents.

The bad: More story than action. Long movie (2+ hours). Seems they used the Vampire/Werewolf mythos (weaknesses) in order to drive some plot points. Kate B in leather but no good shots. A lame attempt at plot twist.

In laymen's terms: Liked it enough to have thought the money was worth it. Would have loved more gunfire and Vampire special effects.

Ah, Thanks for the 411 on the movie..i'll probably go see it this week if i have a chance. There's just something about a preternatural being with fangs that turns me on..LoL I'm strange i tell ya

So how much history do you know? As an overseas chinese educated in UK, I know plenty of European History, but hardly anything about Asian History. I know everything from watching old Jet Li films! I've been watching a Japanese anime recently called Rurouni Kenshin which is based at the start of the Meiji Era in Japan, and now I think I know more about Japanese history than I do Chinese history. The problem is, its not offered as an option here to learn chinese history.

So I'm chinese by birth, speak chinese, look chinese etc, but really I don't know the origins of my culture. Time to go off and get some books I think...

Like you, I learn some of my Chinese history from watching Chinese programs and dramatised stories. I used to watch it with my parents and it helped me with my spoken Chinese. The problem is I find history boring. So I don't go out seeking movies and shows based on recorded history. Another problem is that stories told in, using AFM's example, the Jet Li movies (Once Upon A Time in China I, II and III) is that they are obviously embelished and fictional. The strife presented in the story is a back-drop. More of a story plot mover just so that we can see Wong Fei Hung (Jet Li) deal out his Paladin-like words of enlightenment -- and then kick some arse.

I have heard that there are recent publications translated into English some works that can be said to be true to the original. But, as stated above, I find history boring so I do not recall what they were.

Perhaps, if you also read Chinese -- our resident Linguist (Hong, please stand up) can recommend some history books on China and its culture?

I am ashamed to say that my spoken Chinese is very limited and my written and reading is practically non-existent.

chinese history

Hi ASM,
Unless you live in HK, Taiwan or China, it is unlikely you can really get official Chinese history education. I grew up in Malaysia and although I did learn the language, and the literature. There was nada in the Chinese history.
I am fortunate because my mom knows quite alot about chinese history (her minor in college was Chinese literature). And I could find quite a lot of historical books in Malaysia too.
If you want the first book that shows the Chinese history. The one I recommend is Scripture of History (Shi Ji) by Shi Ma Qian. The original book was written in the traditional language (wen yuan wen) but there are countless of modern language edition available. Go to most book stores in HK or Taiwan you should have no problem to find that.
The sad thing is I know far more from the Hsia dynasty (2000+ BC) down to 1912 than the Chinese history after 1912. Due to all the political reason, it is hard to find an objective history scripture that covers the chinese history after 1912.

It is written in Chinese. Nowadays, most of the edition has translation to the modern oral Chinese. There might be English version available. But why would you want to read a Chinese history scripture in other language? It is like reading the British history in Chinese. You lose some of the "feels" for it.
