So how much history do you know? As an overseas chinese educated in UK, I know plenty of European History, but hardly anything about Asian History. I know everything from watching old Jet Li films! I've been watching a Japanese anime recently called Rurouni Kenshin which is based at the start of the Meiji Era in Japan, and now I think I know more about Japanese history than I do Chinese history. The problem is, its not offered as an option here to learn chinese history.

So I'm chinese by birth, speak chinese, look chinese etc, but really I don't know the origins of my culture. Time to go off and get some books I think...

Well I actually majored in Chinese studies in University... know more about China than I do about the West... and to you the truth evidently know a heck of a lot more about Chinese history than do most people here in China... I actually would recommend reading books in English on Chinese history... as most of the best writing and historiography on China is done in the West (and yes by Chinese too, as there aren't as many political ramifications as there would be in Taiwan or China).. then there are also the issues of "official" history vs. trying to figure out what was really happening..... but I digress..

I just read a great book written by a Yale professor I know that provides a new look/analysis of early Chinese history (pre- Tang dynasty) called "The Open Empire" by Valerie Hansen..

and here is a pretty decent list from Amazon..

It is written in Chinese. Nowadays, most of the edition has translation to the modern oral Chinese. There might be English version available. But why would you want to read a Chinese history scripture in other language? It is like reading the British history in Chinese. You lose some of the "feels" for it.

Because i can't read chinese fluently

It seems I've been mistaken in my heritage .... I just came across my maternal grandfather's official birth certificate, it seems his mother was Señora Victoria de León!

All growing up we always wondered why when, drunk, he'd start speaking Spanish. My mom said it was because he used to live and work in Mexico! It seems that my mom (and grandmother) disliked to admit that we were not 100% asian.
