If I was a black Canadian I think my choices are 1)smile sourly and accept that life is a vale of tears or 2) hang myself.
INNOCENT GUY
Youve inspired me to write a new national anthem for Canada: IF IT'S FREE, IT'S FOR ME. The word 'free' is linked to most things Canadians hold dear.

I recall a time when people didnt have health insurance. Fifty years ago, to be exact. Veterans or active military got free medical care, but that was it.
Here's what I see. Twenty years ago, when I stopped doing psychotherapy, you had to be pretty crazy and dangerous to see me. Two psychiatric hospitalizations was the minimum criteria to get an appointment and get the bill covered by Medicaid or insurance.
But now I get kids who dont get along with their sister or brother, and that's their worst problem. Mom wants the brat on meds, too. If the kid fidgits in class, the school wants him on meds. One of my clients, 3 years old, is scheduled for a medication evaluation. I think he acts like a normal 3 year old but mom and daycare want him on meds. A social worker is pestering me to have a 9 year old examined by a neurologist. His problem? He doesnt get along with his brother.
My point is, society has gone apeshit crazy about the necessity to treat every goddamned thing there is.
Actually, there was medical insurance, even that long ago. Blue Cross and Blue Shield. I agree that kids are overmedicated. Fifty years ago, there was no such thing as Attention Deficit Disorder. Kids were sometimes naughty and sometimes really active, but these were accepted as being normal states. I can't help thinking that if yu dope some kid up so all he does is sit quietly, you are doing him more harm than good.
Is term 'Canadian' used as racist word?
Email lands Texas district attorney in hot water

Is "Canadian" the new black? Perhaps – that is if you're a racist speaking in code.
Recent revelations that the term "Canadian" is being used to replace racist names for black people have got a Texas assistant district attorney into trouble and have left others wondering what exactly it means to be labelled a Canadian in the American south.
Long derogated as weak-kneed liberals with lax laws and funny monopoly money, Canadians have carried a negative connotation in certain regions of America – but not as a replacement for the N-word.
Earlier this week a columnist with the Houston Chronicle uncovered an email from Harris County assistant district attorney Mike Trent who, in a congratulatory note to a junior prosecutor, used the word "Canadians" to describe blacks on a jury.
Trent wrote of the prosecutor in a 2003 email: "He overcame a subversively good defence by Matt Hennessey that had some Canadians on the jury feeling sorry for the defendant and forced them to do the right thing."
Trent's email remained unchallenged by colleagues who received the email, despite there being no actual Canadians on the jury.
But when Trent's office came under scrutiny this month over an unrelated incident, the email was unearthed, leaving Trent open to accusations of bigotry.
Those accusations are grounded in allegations that the use of "Canadians" was in keeping with the definition listed on an online racial slurs database that defines "Canadian" as a masked replacement for the N-word.
In his own defence, Trent said he honestly thought there had been Canadians on the jury and did not understand the negative connotation of the word.
Others, including the columnist with the Houston Chronicle initially thought the reference to Canadians may have been a misspelling of Californians, who are themselves seen to espouse many of the same liberal values as Canadians.
Despite the controversy, Henry Wells, a Texan and media relations officer with the Canadian Consulate General in Dallas, says he has never heard the term used in a racial manner before.

Honestly, Box. How many other diseases or problems were we unaware of fifty years ago? People were dying of polio in the U.S. fifty years ago, for chrissake.
Medical advances are bound to identify more medical problems.
The USA was well aware of polio more than 50 years ago. The first vaccine was developed in 1952.
ADDS is not a medical problem. To the degree that it is a problem at all, it is a psychiatric problem. I will concede there is such a thing;I just believe it is diagnosed much too quickly. What I mean is that a child who is a bit over-rambunctious is sometimes treated when he really needs no treatment, except, maybe, cutting down on sugar.
I a inclined to believe thre is more than a little charlatanism (if there i such a word) among psychiatrists. I say this because I have worked with them and have seen how so many of them are just out for easy money.
I have never actually seen a shrink as a patient. Those I have known, I knew when I was working as a clerk-typist for them. I considered most of them to be pretty whacko. Whether that means anythng or not, I don't now.
Americans make fun of Canucks because they can't laugh at themselves. lol. It's obvious, dammit!![]()
Dumbest thing I've read all day.
But do the research. ADD and ADHD are chemical imbalances in the brain. They ARE a medical issue.
You've never seen a shrink as a patient but you've decided most of them are "whacko"?
I can't really take the rest of your post with any seriousness, either.

I've never seen a shrink as a patient but I have worked with them as clerical support and read some of their reports on patients. The ones I have known personally always seemed to be a bit whacko, the way they dresed and the way they talked and the way they acted. I was never a client or a patient so they were themselves around me, rather than putting on a professional front.
I realize that ADD and ADHD exist, but I also contend that their diagnoses are made without any scientific supprt, just from what parents and teachers and others say, and that these "witnesses" are often just looking for a way to control the kids.
