Car advice?

I just have to smile at all the comments about 'too small' and 'good mileage', and 'high cost of gas'........
In the UK, you get a reduction in your annual road tax if your engine size is 1400cc and less..........check.
We have lots of truly 'small' cars over here, par for the course, which, when you consider the cost of our gas - £1 a litre = £6 a gallon = $12. Costs me around £32 ($64) to fill my tank, and that will do me between 330/350....equates at around 29/47 - 38 combined.
I can still see the in-law's faces at the airport when they saw my car - Vauxhall Corsa Breeze .... I wasn't expecting so much luggage! they had to carry one suitcase on the backseat between them...it made for a 'cosy' drive home.

Oh, and its all about the negotiation and knowing the business. Now's a good time to buy a car. And don't listen to people that give you advice on "how do get a good deal". You will get /a/ deal. You will never get /the/ deal. The system is just not designed that way.
S'why I prefer new cars... less mark-up and more information and better incentives. And GAP insurance is good. And don't beat up the salesman. And make only reasonable offers.

Every Nissan I've ever had has out-performed, had more niceties, needed fewer repairs, and plain out-lasted any of the American cars/trucks I've ever had, and I've had a few.
As far as new goes, I'll let someone else take that first huge depreciation hit.
We're fairly good at the negotiation thing. We know when we walk in what we're willing to pay for a car, and I'm willing to look at whatever they have in that range. If they don't want to find something in that range for me, I walk away - won't waste their time or mine, and I don't get my heart set on anything until the keys are in my hand.

maxima's rock .... especially the ones from about 2004 and earlier that came from Japan.

Me, when we change the car - and that's coming soon, 165,000 miles in 9 years, I still want us to get a PT Cruiser like the one Min had back in Arizona. It's a good looking car, very spacious seatwise and carrying luggage, etc. I loved it. And since we've been back in UK, we keep seeing Cruisers all over the place, even in our little out of the way, neck of the woods.

Me I want a truck next. *dreams* For the truck I want I need to be back in the states. I think driving a doublecab dodge duely might just scare the hell out of some of the drivers near where we live. Hubbies reanault 25 makes them move to the far side of the road as it is! Get a larger vehicle next to them and they damn near land themselves in the bushes *shakes head*

Be fair, our roads are kind of narrow......I've given the wife many a heart attack taking her on a short cut that is barely the width of our tiny car. No wonder she's not keen to drive over here. But if she wants to, she's going to have to take the UK driving test - imminently. She's out of time on her States licence.
Edited because I just took a peek at a doublecab dodge duelly.......good god woman, that's freakin' huge! You wouldn't even be able to get it round some of our local roads, it's far too wide.
There's a Nissan dealership garage near our local McD's, and I was admiring some of the trucks there the other day, double cab size with pickup. Very nice, in black and chrome. Very nice indeed.

I'd tell her to get to taking her test soon as its going to get harder they say.
And it was rather nightmarish when I took mine as it was last year.

I know, she needs some 'familiarisation' lessons, hours and hours on the roundabouts, and parking - her weaknesses according to her, then she'll apply for the test. She has got her provisional licence, but I'm not going to push. Her call. I'm more than happy to drive, but it would give her so much more freedom.
