Can it be done? I have a picture that I want to use as an AV. When I try to use it, I get the message that it's not a valid jpeg, gif, or png file. I don't know what this means.

How do I convert one to the other?

assuming you're using some form of art program, it should allow you to open the BMP and save as JPG. but you're probably better off saving it as a GIF instead: i think those are generally smaller.

Download the FREE program Irfanview. I will do wht you want and more for free.
It isn't photoshop, but it's great.

Ditto.

i do, but i was curious. jeez, would a warning sign or something be too much to ask?! :p

well, too late for me, but hey, if that warning can help prevent one more sphincter-clench, then at least my sacrifice can have meaning.

Sphincter-clench... :D That's pretty darn funny, ed!

(This thread is getting way more attention that it deserves.)

I know this is an old thread, but ...

GIF format is usually smaller because it is limited to 256 colors.

However, JPeG format has an adjustable comression ratio -- usually labeled "JPeG Quality" -- that will allow you to sacrfice some quality for filesizes smaller than GIF format without losing the color depth of a "True Color" (65 Million colors) image.

The way I do it without downloading anything:
save the picture as a bmp
open paint and copy and paist the picture directly into an AOL email (I've never tried it with other emails)
email it to yourself and save the picture
the picture should save as a jpg, at least it does for me

You don't have to do anything other than to bring it into paint and then choose "save as" and select jpg or gif from the dropdown list. You don't have to mail it to yourself or do any other manipulation.

I think I tried that before, but I can only save as a bmp from paint, because I only have paint on my computer.....I can't even open the pictures I save as a jpg because I don't have a program.

paint on xp

I have windows XP and "paint" which comes with XP can read a variety of picture images including BMP and JPG and the "save as" feature has a dropdown list to convert the picture to other formats. I'm not sure what windows version you are using......

Nothing beats http://www.irfanview.com/

It's free. It does a ton of stuff. I use it when I'm on my Laptop away from GraphicConverter (for Mac)
