I think they’re related. That poll was prompted by that David Icke guys who’s theories @cheekygirl75 is referencing. I’m also pretty sure the Atlantic wasn’t promoting it as serious social science
The way the poll was conducted, it wouldn't surprise me if it was the same three people, high on hallucinogenics and watching They Live, answering it over and over. They didn't poll a million people, much less twelve million. They took the responses and projected them, as if those numbers were representative of the entire population.
