Charlie the Cat.

condolences

he looked so much like my Tabby...sigh. cats are so very special. for however long they grace us with their prescence. i was a 'cat mom' for 15 yrs to Stevie and Tabby. i had to give them up to a no kill shelter when the circumstances of my life prevented me from continuing to be their mommie. i cried for days! it was horrible. one the worst experiences of my life. but you do get past it. and i still have a few pictures left and very fond memories. as for more animals..cats, dogs, etc. it does seem to work out best for them to choose you. Stevie and Tabby chose me! one day i hope to be in a position to care for pets properly again. not only are they great companions, for children they are a source of learning responsibilty and caring. again, condolences on your loss. i hope some sweet kitty 'finds' you again when you are ready.

Last saturday we had to have Katy, our cat of 19 years, put to sleep. I was there when they did it and I cried like a baby.

She was pretty sick there towards the end, and I know it was the right thing to do, but still... The house isn't the same knowing she's gone, and it's strange coming down in the morning and not having her bitching about her breakfast.

There's a Jewish tradition of burning a yahrzeit candle for the departed. It's more a custom than it is a religious ritual, and it can be done any time you feel like it. It's a sign of loss and remembrance, and I think of it as kind of a sign to the spirits that you remember them too. I burned one for Katy, but we still miss her.

I grieve with you, darling. Sometimes it seems like the price of love is grief, but it's always worth it, isn't it?

---dr.M.

It is worth it, particularly with animals. We can't give our love so unreservedly to humans, usually.

Doc, so sorry about your kittykat. 19 years is an amazing life for a cat to live.

Thanks Alpaca...I just saw your message *S* Actually I am a rarity,a dog and cat person :) I do love the snootiness cats have though *L*

Carsonshepherd -I think if we get a new friend-he or she will find us *smiles*

Lisa -thank you-you made me cry again*L*

My dog, Scooter, well he is getting to be a dog, he is a mid-size puppy, needed a bath, he don't like baths. Anywho, after his bath he was all mad at me, I had brushed him and put the flea stuff on him and all the stuff he don't like. I was thinkin about this thread and so I made him some pancakes, he loves pancakes, they are like his favorite human food. I would never have made him any pancakes in the afternoon if it wasn't for your love for your cat, touching me through this thread.

Charlie is still making friends, still wandering into peoples gardens and lives.

Scooter sends a big sloppy kiss and says thanks for the pancakes.

*hugs* Doc yes it is so very much worth it. Katy was a lucky cat being with you for 19 years and it is alwaysdificult to make such a decision *more hugs*

cynter *smiles* cats are precious,Charlie made me smile even more often than he mad me growl at him for being naughty *L*

You're very welcome Scooter :)

Lisa, you're brilliant. I loved this story and the thought of Scooter getting pancakes just for him. Thanks to you, mine got cheddar cheese on their food tonight (they go wild for that).

My cat was killed this summer while I was out of town. I'm sorry for your loss, and I feel your pain.

*hugs* Lucky that must have been horrid!

It was probably for the best. Just harder to let go because my husband buried him before I returned. So in my mind, one minute he was there and when I returned he was not. I don't suppose it makes much difference. You still miss the cold nose kisses that aren't there in the morning.

Has it been hard on the baby? *hugs* to you and her both.

I can feel your loss, EL because I have felt the same loss many times. I have had kitties around me most of my adult life and, of course, that means that many of them have died over that period. I can never get used to losing them, but at least I usually was able to enjoy their company, and they enjoyed mine for a long time.

I have heard and read people say that cats are arrogant and unloving. I just pity those people for their ignorance.

I don't think she's really grasped it. I think she sees it as he's gone off on holiday or something. *smiles* At 3 I don't suppose she'd get much more of a handle on it than that :)

Sad to hear about Charlie, and the others lost little friends too. Cats are very special companions.

I agree. My little girl asked for our Joey for two weeks afterwards. It was heartbreaking and a constant reminder to me, but after long hours of thinking I never did come up with a suitable excuse for his absence that wasn't an outright lie. She finally stopped asking when I found a cute little plastic frame at the store and put a picture of him in it. I just told her she'd always have him to look at whenever she wanted and she seemed happy with that. It sits by her bed and she kisses it every night.

:rose:

I sometimes need to kiss it when she's not looking.

Now there is a very good idea Lucky - I shall keep that in mind :) Sounds really sweet :)

EL I feel your pain. As you know I am a cat person, both of ours are what I call rescues. The first I retrieved from a raided Crack House. She was so small she fit in my jacket pocket. The second was three years old when we got him. His previouse owner had to let him go because her son developed asthma. I just couldn't see him going to a shelter so he came to our place.

Both of our cats sleep on the bed with us. (Great fun when they get to fighting/playing in the middle of the night.) We wouldn't give them up for anything, and in fact have dealt with problems finding a place to rent in the past because of them.

May you find another, or may another find you as the case may be.

Cat

P.S. Cats are not arrogant. The Egyptians revered them as gods and they have never forgotten this.

seacat -I let charlie sleep in with me at first but lord his purr was loud and he liked to snuggle right up under my chin *chuckles*

Feeling not too bad today. I still feel like he might just turn up at any minute though and seeing Charlies friend "monty" the next door neighbours cat on our wall last night made me smile. They were best mates. Would snuggle up together in our garden to keep themselves warm. I bet monty misses him too.

Thanks Impressive :)

Beth just told me that Charlie is with the Angels and the Angels are nice and they won't scare him *LOL*

Made me cry like a baby but I've got this image of him surrounded by cat toys and doting angels -dashing about from one bouncing toy to the next *L*

What a sweet image.

My dad was into native american lore and when our animals died he told us they'd gone to the Happy Hunting Ground. I love to picture our beagle running though meadows and woods, hot on the trail of bunnies and squirrels, without any pain. It does comfort you, doesn't it?

Glad you're feeling better. Nice to have the condolences of so many kind people. :rose:

Yeah it is lovely to imagine him happily playing and eating to his hearts content *L*

Thanks to everyone -you've amazed me with all your kind words :) :rose:

Whereas, of course, I think "Charlie" and "Angels" and imagine him having an amazing crime-fighting, secret agent, through-the-intercom afterlife. But perhaps he'd like that.

I particularly remember two kittens I had, and they would both sleep with me. Sometimes they would play queen on the hill, (They were both girls) with me being the hill. I would lie in bed under the covers and they would wrestle on the hill I made for them, trying to knock each other off.:)
