When they stopped and found a spot where they might make camp, Vuduin asked Cillian to help him make sure the area was safe before they made camp. As they walked, Vuduin said, “I’m glad you made it out of the empire alive.” Then he sucker-punched his long time friend.
Cillian staggered. “What the hell?” He drew a dagger.
“You ran away and hurt Siora, and then you hurt Desire. You’re an asshole.”
Cillian sheathed his dagger and said, “Fair. Listen, I wasn’t planning any of this. And I figured if I didn’t tell you where I was going, I wouldn’t have to ask you to lie for me.” They kept walking, Cillian rubbing his sore jaw. “Your cross has gotten pretty good.”
“Oh, fuck you,” Vuduin laughed.
They walked in silence for a while. Then Vuduin said, “What was Desire to you?”
Cillian tensed. “I wouldn’t have to have you lie for me if my father ever asked you.”
Vuduin nodded. He had more questions, he was sure he’d get the same response. Cillian was secretive and good at lying, even as they grew up. It was no surprise that he became a spy, or that he could become one. His departure had been surprising.
When they returned, the tents were set up. They had four tents. After a little haggling, it ended up with Cillian and Siora sharing a tent, then Desire and Phyrra, Vuduin and Jassin, and Tarron got his own.
With everything set, the night settled. Vuduin volunteered to take the first watch.
