cold sores are a herpes virus but not the same one as genital herpes, even so they can be spread by skin to skin contact especially if the lesion is still active- meaning hasn't dried up and scabbed over yet.

Try some abreva if you want a quick over the counter fix. $ 13 a tube at Walmart, K-mart etc. Or I also have used Novitra which is a little cheaper but doesn't resolve the sore as quickly. To dry it out more quickly use anbesol or even baby orajel on it every 2-3 hours and stay out of the sun and wind as these only irritate cold sores even further. Refrain from touching it if possible so that you don't end up spreading it to another part of your lip. In the future if you apply the cream of your choice at the first sign of itching/tingling the sore may not even appear.

I know you don't want old wives tales but I'll pass a tried and true one along anyway. Drink lots of citrus punch while you have a cold sore- you know that nasty Sunny D stuff or a cheaper generic version. It helps lessen the duration and symptoms of the sore.

thx so much MsKey for your adive!
just so happens that i had a dentist app. this morning so i got a prescription for Denivr.....its supposed to work well....although that doesnt help me much right now with my g/f whos coming over in an hr  but i will drink sunny delight....even though i dont really like it much ;) so that means if i give her oral she cant be affected?? its only if i kiss her?......and i think she has had cold sores before so doesnt that mean shell have the for the rest of her life anyways so it doesnt matter much??....
thx again for all your help
:)

i just checked out www.webmd.com wich is a really cool site... and it said that the herpes and genital herpes are different but theres a chance that you can get genital herpes from regular herpes.....so i guess theyll be no 69 action this weekend.....ohh well

thx again everyone for your help!

You could also try taking L-Lysine (I'm pretty sure that's it) when you first start to feel one coming on. You can also take it after one occurs, it'll help shorten the length of time it sticks around.

Yes, it IS FOR LIFE!!!

There is no known cure for herpes. Once you get it, you have it for life!! You can get herpes A or B in either place, mouth or crotch. So, a sore in your mouth can be spread to her genitals, as a sore in her mouth can spread to yours. So, abstain from kissing and sex until it crusts over or closes up, and the itching & burning pain subsides. Don't spread this around to other people. You can get rid of ghonerrea, syphillus, clamidia, warts, crabs, and several other things, but NOT HERPES or AIDS! Well, some people have survived HIV, but no one has been cured of herpes. It does get less and less severe over time, like 30 years, but will always come back at the most inopertune times in your life, like weddings, vacations, graduation, interviews, or whenever you least need it to happen.

Get to a "Help" meeting near you to find out more about this. They are not all good, but you will find other people in the same boat and find ways to live with it.

denivir is excellent at treating the cold sores, alas it is generally a bit to expensive for me and so I use over the counter remedies and try to abstain from anything which might bring them on.

Oh and just to back up what magic fingers said I'll tell you how I came about having the strain of herpes that causes cold sores.
My father was blessed in his misbegotten youth to have gone down on a girl with genital herpes. He contracted the virus through a small cut on his gum line but never developed any symptoms and therefore had no clue he was infected. He then some years later passed the virus on to my mother while she was pregnant with me. Neither one of my parents ever had a single symptom of oral herpes however I have had them since infancy and have regrettably passed the virus along to at least one of my own children. Once the virus enters the blood stream it's there for life, so yes if your GF has had lesions appear before she does have the virus anyway, but I still wouldn't advocate kissing or oral sex until after the lesions have passed.

In the interim I swear by the citrus punch. somebody once explained to me why exactly it helps- soemthing about citric acidity- but I forget. In the future to help lessen eruptions cut back on your caffiene and chocolate. I often find that just before I'll have a sore erupt I eat every bit of chocolate I can get my hands on so I know that's a trigger now. Also as I said stay out of the sun and wind for long periods of time, keep your lips well moisturized, and try to keep stress low. You'll never be 100 % rid of the virus but there ia alot you can do to lessen the severity and length of an outbreak.

Keep in mind the herpes virus isn't picky... your cold sore can appear on her vulva if you engage in oral sex as easily as they can be passed to her lips if you kiss. This isn't a virus to be toyed with. 1 in 4 people have the virus and many dont' even know it. Scary huh?

As I am infected with type 1, and have been since pre-puberty, I am quite familiar with all the treatments.

For me, L-lycine in 500mg per day doseage, prevents sores.

Before taking this preventive, I would bloom over a third of my mouth at least twice a year. To dry up a sore in the formative stage I use Tincure of Myrr.

Yes, it is for life.

Okay. Conflicting information here.

So let me ask some questions, because I'm confused as fuck at this point.

***

If a person has an ordinary, run-of-the-mill cold sore on his/her mouth, can it transmit herpes to the genital area?

What is the difference in the strains of the herpes virus?

Scenario: A man goes down on a woman. He has a cold sore. She breaks out with lesions. Does this indicate genital herpes?

And finally...

How do you tell which strain of herpes you have? Does a cold sore indicate something completely different from 'genital' herpes?

***

I'm hoping someone can answer those questions, back them up with sources, and thus clear up the conflicting information...

:)

Sheath:

That website identified them as Herpes-1 and Herpes-2 (evidently they've dropped the '80's "simplex" tags). They are very similar viruses that cause similar symptoms - the site said that Herpes-1, which usually infects the mouth, can also cause genital sores, while Herpes-2, which usually infects the genitals, can also cause mouth sores.

Bad news, bub - looks like "mutual masturbation" is the safest bet for you and your honey...

Click on the links for more details.

http://www.valtrex.com/about-herpes/index.htm
The first link has some good info and facts.

HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both viruses can cause genital herpes. Roughly speaking, HSV-2 causes 90% and HSV-1 causes 10% of all genital herpes.
http://www.herpes.com/

http://www.racoon.com/herpes/

These are just a few good sites. They contain links that have many details and cover most of the questions asked here.

LongSlow4Plays, You, especially should read these, and especially the first link in the first URL.
And please, refrain from giving out incorrect advice on such an important medical topic when you obviously DO NOT know the correct answers! And no, you can't "Get rid" of them. You can only reduce the severity of an outbreak.

YES

SLIGHT DNA DIFFERENCES, BUT THEY ARE VERY SIMILAR.
Scenario: A man goes down on a woman. He has a cold sore. She breaks out with lesions. Does this indicate genital herpes?
YES!
And finally...

How do you tell which strain of herpes you have? Does a cold sore indicate something completely different from 'genital' herpes?
ONLY DETAILED TESTING CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE, AND THAT IS USUALLY NOT WORTH THE TIME OR TROUBLE. THE SYMPTOMS ARE SIMILAR. I DOUBT IF EVEN THE DOCTORS ARE AWARE OF THE DIFFERENCES IN THE OUTBREAKS OR SYMPTOMS BECAUSE THEY WOULD BE SLIGHT, AND NOT WORTH THE EFFORT. ONE CAN HAVE HERPES 1 & 2 IN BOTH PLACES!!! THERE's A GOOD CHANCE THAT I DO! See sources in the other post. MF

Thank you, gentlemen, for clearing all that up! :) Hopefully there won't be any further erroneous information.

Who cares if it's Herpes 1 or 2? Herpes is Herpes and it's no fun.

I picked mine up from sharing lipstick with a friend who had it during a play in HS. Thankfully I don't have breakouts very often, but they're unsightly and painful. I've been with hubby now for 18 years and I've not passed it on to him, at least he's never broken out with one. So I suppose the moratorium on kissing him or going down on him has worked.

Abreva is worth every penny if you can apply it as soon as you feel it coming on. If you wait, it doesn't work as well. But it stopped my sore from a full bloom and cut the amount of time I had to deal with it by a week.

Good point

In spite of my earlier admission, I have taken precautions and used abstinance at many times when I didn't want to abstain, and I don't think I have ever given it to someone else.
However, I do believe I got H-1 from my ex, from kissing. I have had more outbreaks in my mouth and lips than on my penis for the last 10 years. And, I use all the stress relievers, stay away from nuts (& crazy people:)), and just don't kiss or have sex when an outbreak is comming on. (YOU CAN FEEL IT!! Yes, you can tell. Listen to your body!)

i hate cold sores

thank god i've only gotten 3 in my lifetime.

it could be the herpes type 1 (the oral one), which i do believe i read CAN be spread to the genitals and alter slightly.
there are also some cold sores that just happen periodically and w/ an actual cold, from THAT virus coming out through the skin (which is the kind i have had). however, if you find yourself constantly getting them it is probably the herpes thing.

its possiblt to get genital herpes from oral herpes if you rec oral sex from that person

Cold sores are not caused by cold viruses. That is just a nice way to talk about them that other people will accept without saying "EWWWW!"
When your body is run down or your body's defences are down, or you are under stress, or eat certain foods, THAT's when cold sores or genital herpes appear. Notice when you read that that you breezed right by "cold sores" but probably cringed at "Genital Herpes"? That's why people call them cold sores. People don't see the other kind, so we don't use another name for it.

I don't know if you can get anal herpes from oral, but I suppose you can.

And, Shy, I can't wait for you to get to 100 post and see what your AV is going to be! :)

Cold Sores are a strain of herpes, but are not genital herpes. Yet if you have a cold sore you can spread it to your partner through oral and kissing. There is proof that cold sores can spring up on the genitals if they are in contact and same with genital herpes and your lips. So if you have a cold sore, I would suggest not popping it or what have you, and doing you best to minimize the risk to the people you care about.
