Condoms - Hot or not?

These are the things I 'worry' about when writing a lit story -- will my characters using condoms be seen as 'not hot' and thus score me some 1bombs for stroke-ability. Is it too 'deep' for this audience?

The only complaint that was made about that story was that it was 'depraved filth'. That unsolicited one star review on Amazon got me multiple downloads! So sad that I put it up free, I could have been 50 Shades of Fur! <snerk> Well, OK, some people did say it was badly edited and the dialogue was horrible but nobody complained about the condom, LOL.

I find it a really interesting writing exercise to figure out how to get the condom on and not put the reader off.

Sometimes I just slip it in: 'la la la, and there was the rustle of the condom packet'.

Sometimes I make a joke out of it. This is what I did with the werewolf, I had him say to the girl: "you don't want to have puppies, do you?"

Sometimes I make a big thing of it (ho ho). In one story I wrote, the slut ... I mean innocent young heroine who happens to like sex, would use a different condom for different characters. I used the type of condom to indicate character, if that makes sense. I gave a Fetherlite to the lightweight character and a Trojan Magnum to the main love interest.

I don't think the use or non-use of a condom has anything to do with the hotness of a story. The hotness is based on the characters, the situations, and the sex. Just like in real life.

I normally write my characters going raw-dog but this story is about boundaries and well...nothing is more of a boundary than a condom I fear it's too 'deep' for the Lit crowd but I'm really enjoying the rest of the story, the condom bit is a huge challenge to be smexy for me. I bet it doesn't earn as many one bombs as other perceived offenses, air quotes or not. Lots of back key clicks though.

Personally, I vote not hot. Fantasy vs reality applies here, and we're here to fantasize. We're pretending that a single glance across a crowded room always leads to phenomenal sex, and that we'll never get caught by the police while having sex in public (except when it's a hot cop who wants to join). Why can't we also pretend they're are no stds or unwanted pregnancies? Sure it's little unrealistic, but that's half the fun!

Naoko has sensitized some of us authors to condom issues. I now approach condom usage as a plot point and character reveal. Is the player cautious, survival-oriented? Or careless, reckless, unconsciously self-destructive? Are condoms used by friends or only strangers? Is a condom part of the fucking ritual? Does a rich guy use condoms to avoid paternity suits? I also track condom use to eras -- stories set in the 1950s, 1970s, 1990s, and 2010s will have different approaches.

For me I don't think condom or no condom would make a story hot or not. I've written stories both ways (not for Lit).

Using a condom can add aspects to a story that may not otherwise exist. Waiting until the man is wrapped up can add tension. Having the woman apply the condom can add interest -- especially if she does it with her mouth.

In one story I wrote the woman used the lack of a condom as her rational for refusing sex then signaled her suitor when she was ready by providing the condom herself. I liked that, but I don't know if anyone else would.

When I write contemporary stories with contemporary people, I will likely make some reference to the guy wearing a condom, because I think it's what a lot of people would realistically do. I might also mention a woman on the pill, or both. I don't dwell on it (although if people want to make a bigger deal out of it, that's fine), because it's not crucial to my story, but it feels to me like it's worth mentioning.

But my guess is most people probably don't care. It's fantasy and they're looking to get off, and how realistic it is probably is not their foremost concern.

I don't think you can shoehorn readers into a single category. Some will think it is hot and some will think it isn't. Depends on their POV and Lit readers have the most varied POV's I've ever seen.

For me though, condoms in fantasy would only be used for effect. My characters are fictional and as such they live in a world I create. Unlike God's world where there is a lot of bad, my world does not have any STD's or unwanted pregnancies, at least not unless I say it does and then a condom is not going to save my characters

I get blasted on a fairly regular basis for not having my characters use condoms. I'm told insightful things like "She's going to end up with aids" and crap like that. It makes me laugh because she's not! I won't write that and so it won't happen. Damn this power is going to my head

And before you say something like we as author's should be setting an example with our stories, go read one of my stories. NOONE and I mean NOONE should EVER do hardly anything that is in my stories!

I'll throw my two cents worth into the ring. I think condom usage (or not) can help with character development in a story. Depending on the situation, I'd probably portray a smooth, persuasive football jock as one who disregards condom usage. On the other hand, a young woman, thinking about what her mother told her about unplanned pregnancies, would most likely require her lover to use protection.

Not all stories on Literotica are fantasies, and my opinion is that keeping some realism in a story makes it more authentic. The same goes for breast and penis size.

As an author I say for you to not worry about what readers think is hot or not. You should write the story the way you think it should be written.

Now my opinion as a reader is condoms are a turn off. This is erotica and its fantasy. Condoms are a necessary reality but here it should be more about fun not a sex ed class.

To me it would be like having to have a woman in a chapter series saying she has her period every fourth chapter or people having bad breath and positional mishaps. This is porn not a guide to what people should do to in the real world.

But again that is me as the reader and others may share that opinion but there are others who feel the other way so go baco to my first point and write what you want.

Lots of successful writers around here slant their stories to include personal opinions about sex or gender relations. If condom use is an important statement, then include it in everything you write. NaokoSmith is a good example of how you can do so and be very successful.

That's pretty much my take on it as well. I can't speak for anybody else, but if I'm expected to get into the mindset of a female character, having her ignore safe sex can drop me out of the story lickety-split (unless, of course, she's trying to get pregnant). Maybe women readers have a different take on it than men readers do. I expect female readers to read about my female characters and think "Hey, I'm that person." But maybe that's because I write primarily for myself, and want to identify with those characters.

Yes indeed. I also think of the context. If the story is a fuck-fantasy stroker or snarky satire, condoms are optional. For a more serious narrative, condoms may be mandatory, depending on setting -- sometimes it's impossible, and sometimes that's a major plot point. Sometimes I break the fourth wall and talk about the era and its sexual norms. It depends on the story I need to tell.

There are so many different kinds of erotic stories - so many kinds of realism even. I only review safe sex stories on my blog, because I hope that providing fiction which makes using condoms seem normal will make young people more confident about asking for safe sex. (I live in a part of the world with high teenage pregnancy rates.) One or two older people have actually written to say they are using condoms now in their sex life as well as their stories! so I guess it's working.

I enjoy reading bareback stories, however I do also enjoy the intellectual challenge of figuring out how to get safe sex into a story. Sometimes it can be a bit rough - but then I like a bit of rough
