I personally find this(Battle) flag to be a symbol of treason. It of course is racist and it is revolting to see.Why is it on racist women's swimwear? Given what the Confederacy fought for, it is impossible to defend it morally. Here is a quote by Jefferson Davis-"[Slavery] was established by decree of Almighty God…it is sanctioned in the Bible, in both Testaments, from Genesis to Revelation." I mean, the Texas Declaration of Secession mentions slavery 21 times and mentions taxes zero times, as the war wasn't fought over Tariffs or Taxes or States Rights, but was fought over slavery. To add to insult, that flag was in the Capitol Building on January 6th, 2021.

It most definitely is and history shows why. The confederate flag crept like slime mold up the side of a building when the first push backs against Jim Crow happened, in.the early part of the 20th century. It was in defiance of civil rights activity and exploded in the 50s. Wasn't southern pride, was defiance against civil rights.

Many of us kids of a certain age had a model Dukes of Hazard car with that flag on it, and if you were sporting it on your clothes, belt buckles, and other apparel, it usually meant nothing more than, you were from the deep south and proud of where you grew up. I most certainly wouldn't be flying it now though.

A similar thing has happened with the Gadsen "Don't Tread On Me" flag. Back in the day, it used to mean, defiance of government tyranny and oppression. Now it means, SUPPORT of government tyranny and oppression. The shift began roughly 10 years ago when far-right, white nationalist extremist groups began adapting that flag for their own movement, which, ideologically speaking, was pretty far from the libertarian ideals it was intended to represent.

Liberty has never depended upon protecting only those opinions that flatter the majority. Any petty magistrate can accomplish that. The true measure of freedom is the willingness to tolerate expression one finds distasteful, foolish, or even repellent. If a symbol is false, expose its falsehood. But do not enlist the police in the service of wounded feelings, because governments rarely surrender such powers once acquired. The South was unsuccessful in their bid for what they believed to be freedom. That doesn't mean it was wrong or that it was done for the reasons put forward by the racists of today who pin that label on everyone they can find in an effort to hide their own bigotry from sight. That the weak willed go along with it is why the South attempted succession in the first place.

It was a war of two competing empires in one nation, the industrial empire and the plantation slavery empire. The south always needed more land because it was damaging soil fertility with poorly adapted European farming. The north needed growing markets. The industrial north won, for a while. Now it's running out of fossil fuels. All empires end.
