Rev. Al Green did the original

got a few more

Louie, Louie - Stooges (kingsmen)
Only Love Can Break Your Heart - St. Etienne (Everlast does a good version too)
Be Thankful for What You Got - Massive Attack (William DeVaughn)
Dark Side of the Moon album - Easy Dub All Stars (Pink Floyd)
A House is Not a Home - Luther Vandross (Dionne Warwick)

big daddy is a band that did some interesting things. I wouldn't exactly call them favorites in that they're something I'd want to listen to all the time, but pretty cool to listen to every once in awhile.

I had a tape by them called cutting their own groove, where they took the lyrics from songs that were popular at the time (80's) and put them over the music of songs from the 50's and 60's. the ones I can recall most readily were ice, ice baby over johnny b. goode and welcome to the jungle over the lion sleeps tonight, but there were some other cool ones, too.

the next tape they put out was (I think) a reworking of sgt. pepper's lonely hearts club band, but I never really got a chance to listen to that one.

I dunno who the jimmi is that you're talking about, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that whiskey in the jar was a thin lizzy song that metallica covered.

dennis de young of styx covered the old hendrix song fire on one of his solo albums. it's extremely cheesy, but by god, I like it.

on the other hand, gary moore also covered the song. .... gary's solo was pretty rocking, but I still hate the fucking song.

Hey moonie... i think Zmey mean James Hetfield, Metallica's vocalist  and i know thin lizzy did it too ...that's the original?

and lol seems i was unlucky...i heard Gary Moore's Cover but not de young's...but i'll be on the look out. thanks babe

It's a very old traditional Irish folk song.. it's been done hundreds of times by a lot of peeps - but the Thin Lizzy version rocks. And is probably the best known version.....
And......:
Rosalie - Thin Lizzy (Bob Seger)
Heard It through the Grapevine - Creedence Clearwater Revival (Marvin Gaye, I believe)
He Made a Woman Out Of Me - Ry Cooder w/Amy Madigan (Bettye Lavette)
Mercury Blues - David Lindley (K. C. Douglas)
Tell Me - Stevie Ray Vaughan (Howlin' Wolf)

oooh naughty...you a hit nerve with the Annie Lennox track, i've been having an annie week...so that was superb, thank you :)

moreeeeeeeeeeeeee

Am listening to Johnny Cash's last album American IV: The Man Come Around, prettty much the ultimate cover album...all my favs, Hurt, Personal Jesus, First Time Ever I Saw Your Face this one grows on you)...

but there's version of Desperado (the eagles) i've never heard of before...and it's amazing.

OH! and holy shit. Has anyone heard Travis' cover of Britney Spears' (Hit Me Baby)One More Time. Listen to it..you'll want to kill yourself for enjoying it so much.

Ben Folds - Bitches Ain't Shit
Jonathan Coulton - Baby Got Back
Tom Jones w/ The Cardigans - Burning Down the House
Hard 'n' Phirm - Rodeohead (massive Radiohead cover)
Hayseed Dixie - Highway to Hell
Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb

I'm not sure if this counts or not, but there's some really good a cappella covers of songs... I was hardcore addicted to Rockapella's version of Kiss the Girl for a bit, and this college group did a really good cover of Africa.

I dunno if this counts or not because I dunno if you can find it anywhere or if it was ever even recorded, but marc cohn (the walking in memphis guy) did a version of fever on a tv show called austin city limits a few years ago that is my favorite version of the song ever.

it was just him singing and a dude playing bass.... neat little bass solo including some wah-wah and a little sing along with the audience. it was really cool. damn, I think I need to dig up the videotape. hope I still have it.

I don't have the technology to DL any music so I dunno what's out there... worth listening to if you can find it.

(lol someone might kill me for saying this but... )

Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's Hurt.

Holy hell.

Sometimes, listening to them back to back...you forget who is really covering who.

This one nearly always has me in tears every time I hear it.

My faves.. I think he covered them both anyway are issac hayes doing "by the time I get to phoenix" and "walk on by"

Oooh, I need to hear that!

A lot of folks don't know that Rod Stewarts' Downtown Train is a mutilated cover of a (far better, IMO) Tom Waits song. Damn their eyes.

How about Jersey Girl by Tom.....the greatest song about Jersey. There's a duet with Springsteen that's really good. (It's the greatest Bruce song that he never wrote)

a few more tasty covers...

Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere - Bowie (Who)
In My Life - Dave Matthews (Beatles)
After Hours - Rilo Kiley (Velvet Underground)
Hey Joe - Patti Smith, Jimi Hendrix etc (The Leaves)
Everbody's Got Something to Hide - The Feelies (Beatles)
Bad, Bad Leroy Brown - Frank Sinatra (Jim Croce)

Shine on You Crazy Diamond - Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade (Pink Floyd)
Don't Give Up - Willie Nelson/Sinead O'Connor (Peter Gabriel/Kate Bush)

more to come

I can't believe I haven't mentioned this one yet... one of my all-time favorite covers is atlanta rhythm section doing the classics IV's spooky. totally blows the original away... barry bailey is such a tasty guitar player.

just thought of another cool one, although I dunno if it technically qualifies as a cover.

there's a group called scatterbrain, got a bit of play on mtv centuries ago with a song called don't call me dude. on the cd they covered cheech and chong's earache my eye, which was ok. the cool one was a song called down with the ship. it was one of their songs, but interspersed with with the lines/verses of the song were famous guitar/bass/drum riffs from other classic rock songs. groovy stuff.
