COVID impacts

Lol.

I mean, how dumb is that? Like NSW authorities letting people off cruise ships. That went well.

NSW is lending us 70 contact tracers, though, with medical staff to follow. I'm prepared to forgive a few jokes at our expense, especially when they're funny.

One of mine, HG to be exact, is in the hospital with coughing, and hacking, and a fever. She is in the covid unit but not ICU. HM and I have been tested but no symptoms as of yet. Test results when they come in.

We are home and have been on the phone with the contact people playing 20 questions. HG says it was more like 100 questions for her. She has her phone and internet access. Also, one of her nurses is a friend of mine so if something happens, I'll still get updates.

The state wide mask order went into effect at noon today.

I was worried about you, and it sounds like things aren't working out very well. My best to HG, and my best hopes from you and HM.

I was hoping the last couple of days had been spent doing something too fascinating to tear yourself away. I wish that had been the case. I'm very sorry to hear that.

Nice timing on the order.

Thoughts and prayers for you all, Tex. :rose:

I was worried about you too.
I really hope for a good recovery and no lasting ill effects for HG, and negative test results for you and HM. Sending whatever thoughts and love you need.

Well crap. Thinking my best thoughts for y'all, for what little that's worth.

Just thought I'd drop this here. A lot of people make fun of Rhode Island for being a small state...many think the east coast ends with Mass. I'm not kidding, I did tele-sales as a part time job many years ago and when people asked if I was from Boston(accent I guess) they were like 'where is Rhode Island?'

But we're getting a lot of attention on a national level and for a great reason

https://www.politico.com/news/magaz...-interview-rhode-island-governor-covid-353799

Gina didn't have a great first term, and the only reason I voted for her in 2018 is the piece of work running against her posed in front of Planned parenthood vowing he would shut them down, so...no thanks.

She's done a great job and I'll add something that I know was left out for political reasons. When everyone was fawning over Coumo, she told him to keep his people out of our state and enforced it with the national guard and state troopers on the RI/CT border.

That's how you protect your people, not by worrying about being popular and kissing ass.

Sounds like TxRad and I may be relatively near each other. So far, the Rona hasn't hit our family directly, but we are all keeping a very low profile.

The worst thing that has happened is that my side business was completely shut down for 3 months although the PPP and EIDL loans are helping. We are finally up to date with our landlords.

Working from home kinda sucks. My commute is awesome, 21 stairs and 10 steps to my "desk" in the game room, but I now tend to work 10 hours a day or more and I just don't have the energy to write after I get done.

The down side is that we are on mandatory 20% pay and hours cut, so I now get every Friday off until the end of September, but I don't get paid for it either.

Oh, and the dogs are totally confused. The cat doesn't give a shit.

Mandatory(paid) hours cut, but actual hours remain the same - I noticed.

Today I had to go to my bank branch, wearing a mask. My needs were complex. I can't use internet banking. My typing is inconsistent and my view of the screen is limited and I can't get their website in larger typeface, nor can I hear a stranger on a telephone.

I had to wait for a face-to-face with a customer adviser.

She sorted me out, but at the end she wanted to give me a hug. Under Covid rules that's not possible. I appreciated the thought. I'd like to have hugged her too - she's very huggable and before Covid she had hugged me several times.
That reminded me. In the past ten days, four women neighbours wanted to hug me, and also my chiropodist, the receptionist at the physiotherapist's, three of the physiotherapist's staff and my oncology consultant.

I'm missing a lot.

Yeah, I miss being able to hug my friends, and to get a back massage - I have a physio, but the massage is one of the few places where I can really switch off and relax.

Our numbers aren't great at the moment - not yet clear to me whether we're gradually creeping up, or just levelled off with lots of noise. Either way, it's not the decrease I was hoping for. NSW, on the other hand, I'm cautiously optimistic about, and I hope they continue to keep a lid on their current clusters.

I've seen my kids once or twice since New Years Day. I miss them. Maybe we can get them over when the kitchen is done. By then there might be a vaccine.

Today, my state hit its highest daily count for new cases. New cases for my county -- which contains about 1/3 of the state's population -- were low. The big hit was more than 170 positive cases in a Federal prison west of here -- in one day.

Some of the prisons really are building herd immunity, so if society collapses under the weight of COVID-19, guess who's left.

I've had a couple of Zoom calls with my parents and sister. The first one went really well. The most recent one was ok, but a little forced, I think.
It's another one of those weird things, I usually only see them a couple of times a year, but *not* being *able* to see them has changed things.

My governor posted something over the weekend about considering reimposing some of the restrictions that were loosened at the end of June. The seven day average of new cases is close to the high from the end of April, and there are an increasing number of people in the hospital. I think my governor has done a pretty good job overall, he's definitely been methodical about making decisions. But there's going to be a lot of pushback if he does start restricting things again.

Over the weekend here in Texas, they changed some of the ways they are counting cases and deaths. They are now going through the coroners and medical examiners data bases as well as the hospital counts. My county jumped from one death to five. So far they have added 44 new deaths state wide. It seems the health departments have been missing covid related deaths.

It's legal to keep people from other states from crossing the border into your state? I thought freedom of movement between states is guaranteed in the Constitution.

Maybe we should re-think that one. I want Floridians to stay far away from me

Constitutionally, I don't think that commerce across state lines can be restricted by a state, but there's a HUGE precedence on the question.

Emergency powers are something else. If the Gov puts the State Police or the National Guard at the state line and says you can't cross, then that will probably work for a while. A complaint would have to go to the Supreme Court before it was settled.

A family member of mine was told that he needed heart surgery. The procedure was booked to occur 7 days later.

Then the shutdowns happened, and he was told he would have to wait while the hospitals dealt with Covid cases.

He died 3 weeks later. If he'd had the surgery when it was originally planned, he'd be alive today.

I don't suppose that counts as a Covid death, though it was definitely caused by Covid.
