He had embarked on a journey a couple of months back; a journey that began with a flight from Denver to Barranquilla, Colombia. From there he had backpacked through various parts of the beautiful country of Colombia - a place that were it not for the ongoing violence and insecurity – could easily be called ‘God’s own country’. He enjoyed the slow pace of traveling – where his only concerns could be summarized by three main questions: Where will I sleep? What will I eat? and How will I get to the next place? No responsibilities for others – just exploring new places and getting to know new people and taking the days and hours as he saw fit. These two months had been wonderful and done good to his soul, slowly healing the turmoil of the last year.
Soren – at age 30 – had achieved lots in life. An MBA and entrepreneur he had started an innovative technology firm in the Rocky Mountain region – catering to high-end customers. His charisma, good looks, jovial mannerisms and commitment to excellence had earned him the reputation of a serious business man. He treated his customers with utmost respect and fairness, though he could also show a strong hand and determination to get stuff done – despite protests from others.
But all of that came crushing down – when a former employee now turned competitor pulled a dirty trick and filed a sexual harassment suit against him. She had connections and successfully framed him. The trial was gruesome and though his lawyer eventually was able to convince the jury of his innocence… the year-long trial had left emotional scars and covered a deep emotional toll. He felt exhausted, had lost a number of good clients, his sales were down by 80% and his private life came to a shrieking halt – after his girlfriend left him because of the sexual harassment suit. He urgently needed the break after 8 years of non-stop work. And this is what brought him to Latin America and to that hotel bed in Quito, Ecuador.
He rubbed his eyes and slowly got up, went to the bathroom to shower and get ready for a day of exploring the beautiful colonial downtown of Ecuador’s capital. He would spend the day walking the streets, going to a couple of museums, take relaxing breaks at local coffee shops and prepare for a night out at a hip bar he had noticed yesterday. He hoped to meet some cool people to hang out with and perhaps get to know better…."
