Shoplifting rose 24% across America this year with no end in sight

Some store owners are announcing they had to close up shop because of the increased theft.

Shoplifting has soared in the U.S. in 2024, forcing many stores to leave cities and continuing a trend in recent years.
Shoplifting has risen 24% in the first half of 2024 alone, according to newly released data from the Council on Criminal Justice.

The White House cited the CCJ’s data to boast a drop in violent crime so far this year, but a closer look at the data showed that while violent crime has declined, shoplifting continues to rise. CCJ studied 23 U.S. cities.

Shoplifting has become a major problem in cities around the country, with some store owners announcing they had to close up shop because of the increased theft. Shoplifting and looting during the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots helped spur on a new era of increased shoplifting.

Shoplifting further drives up prices for Americans as stores have to make up for the lost inventory by increasing prices. But prices have already soared over 20% since President Joe Biden took office.

Lawless Democrat DA's are responsible.

Ohhhh just the basement blogger….

You should stop shoplifting so much just to impress Daddy Vlady with your skills. He will love you anyway.

Who has supported shoplifting from the Democratic party?

What specific policies have Republicans enacted to reduce shoplifting?

All of those Democrat-appointed DAs that refuse to prosecute shoplifting. In California, Chicago, and NYC Republicans pretty much extinct.

Look a the source info. 🤣 The article is another right wing propaganda spin piece.

You’re a joke! You’re a propagandist clown.🤡

The source material of the article you posted says:

“Examining patterns for 12 crime types in cities that have consistently published monthly data over the past six years, the study also found that levels of 11 of those offenses were lower in the first six months of this year compared to the first half of 2023. (Shoplifting was the exception.)”

https://counciloncj.org/homicide-mo...es-drop-to-pre-pandemic-levels-in-u-s-cities/

That’s right dumb ass. Of the 12 types of crime studied in the report time line, all have decreased except for one - shoplifting!

And what do you focus on?

Dear @Rightguide , you fact checked loser, why do you hate truth and why do you hate America ?

If you are registered to vote in California, vote yes on Prop 36 this November.

California Proposition 36, the Increase Drug and Theft Penalties and Reduce Homelessness Initiative (#23-0017), is on the ballot in California as an initiated state statuteon November 5, 2024.[1][2]

A "yes" vote supports making changes to Proposition 47 approved in 2014, including:

  • classifying certain drug offenses as treatment-mandated felonies;
  • increasing penalties for certain drug crimes by increasing sentence lengths and level of crime;
  • requiring courts to warn individuals convicted of distributing illegal drugs of their potential future criminal liability if they distribute deadly drugs like fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine; and
  • increasing sentences for theft based on the value of the property stolen.
A "no" vote opposes this initiative that makes changes to Proposition 47 (2014), thereby maintaining certain drug and theft crimes as misdemeanors.

Supported by the California District Attorneys Association, and California State Sheriffs' Association. The top donors include Walmart ($2.5 million), Home Depot ($1 million), and Target ($500,000). For crimes where money or property worth $950 or less is stolen, the initiative would make the crime punishable as a felony for individuals who have two or more prior theft-related convictions (reinstates Petty with a Prior.). The initiative would make the punishment up to three years in jail or prison depending on their criminal history.

Yes, I'm not concerned about the tribal political forum war here and that bothers you. Hope I didn't mess up your dry erase scoreboard at home.

I should head over to Walmart. I need one of those long, roast carving knives. I could slip it down the leg of my leopard skin yoga pants. :)

Wait so you want it? Clearly it’s something to get us closer to your Nazi-Utopia.

Big homeless problem in California eh?

Just do like wrong guide and tell people if they don’t like the homeless there, tell them to move.

Maybe it will have a downward trend after their criminal in chief gets tossed into the slammer??

Law and order!

Stand for nothing, fall for everything.

No dry erase scoreboard for me.

And more folks talking about Project 2025…. This time on a plane to STL. Who knew?!?! It’s funny what you can overhear people saying. Gotta get out in the world to hear it…. Clearly that’s not your calling.

Of course not you don't hold grudges. 👍

I have no desire to discuss 2025 here not anywhere. Others seem to think it will gain votes. Those same people thought Biden dropping out was suicide and here we are with those same people enjoying a nice headwind they never expected.

2025 is too complicated and lengthy and no single voter that is undecided will change their vote in response to it.

But please, visit those grocery stores and preach the good word, dip shit. You continue to bring me laughter.

Biden is responsible for shoplifting. That's your conclusion? Lawless Democrat DAs are responsible, also?

I think you forgot someone... the 78-year-old convicted felon and the lawless Republican DA's he appointed. Yep, a felon sets the example that you can get away with anything, and his cult joins in the shoplifting sprees since it gets them the most bang for the buck.

However, there is good news! Convicted felon Trump's end is insight–November 5th will see a dramatic drop in crime as he reads the headlines that Harris wins. That's my crystal ball prognostication.

It’s a good effort but like any law, it has its pros and cons.

On the downside, while it makes treatment available for felons, it doesn’t help until someone has already been arrested. It’s near impossible for someone on the street to get help with drug addiction unless they are in the criminal justice system, but once they have felonies they become ineligible for many jobs or assistance, creating additional obstacles to getting the worst of the worst off of the street.

It also doesn’t seem to include considerations for mental health. As it is most programs for mental health won’t take drug addicts, while programs for drug addiction won’t take patients for mental health.

More prosecution and incarceration can be good for deterring some people by dissuading them from making bad choices in the first place but it may exacerbate other issues. Incarceration is temporary and expensive, rehabilitation, housing, and jobs need to be a bigger part of the solution or the larger problems will continue to grow.

Treatment, rehab, and an expungement program could go well together.
