But we lived through it! :D

It was fun. Walking to school in the snow was so much fun that we didn't want to stay home. We'd leave earlier than normal and hurry to within a block of the school and then start playing in the snow. One principal put a halt to that by coming out to get us and ushering us into the gym.

Yes it was fun. I think some of that may be because we dressed for the weather "fashion" wasn't the driving force. Keepong warm was.

You are right we wanted to be out there.

It was still fun though. He'd be out there telling us not to aim at anyone's head....we had to hit people's legs. I think he wanted to make sure we didn't get too cold or too wet. I don't think a principal would do that now.

I agree with you. Things are just too controlled these days

He even refereed our dodge ball games sometimes. Now it's banned on most school playgrounds.

Much of what we used to do for fun is banned as being dangerous...

Could that be why there is so much more serious danger now? I mean the youthful energy that was drained by that kind of activity is left to explode in other ways....

You've got a point there. We worked off our energy and aggresion in games. We knew better than to throw the ball at someone's head.......that was dangerous. I remember organizing dodgeball teams for city recreation and on the school playground. Kids had barely enough energy to crawl up the steps after a good game.

And people got the exercise they needed! I mean the children/adults weren't as obese then as they are now.

But now we're so intent on being politically correct that all the fun is gone. Back then if you couldn't play well you were the last one picked for the team. Most of our gym teachers made sure that if you were the last one picked today then the next time we played, you'd pick first. We still knew who couldn't play well, but that's life.

We had to stop grouping children by ability in reading groups because the poor readers would feel bad! Hell, grouping them meant the poor readers got the attention they needed. The whole thing makes me sick to my stomach!

Happy Saturday {{{{DGO}}}}

Yes all of this PC nonsense is just way over the top!

People were exposed to real life at a young age, that it wasn't all "beer and skittles." As you said "that's life" and we have to learn to deal with it.

Yes they did when grouped by ability. And since the good readers probably kept themselves busy reading, it was time the teacher could focus on those who needed the extra help. But that then does take an extraordinarily skilled teacher.

When I started teaching there was no alternative. If you taught grades 1-3, you had three reading groups and you read with each twice a day. All we did was reading, writing and arithmetic. Social Studies and Science were worked in two or three times a week. It didn't matter because by the time the kids reached the 4th grade they were able to read the social studies and science books and understand the concepts.

I remember my 2nd and 3rd grade classes were a combination of the two grades. I remember my days at that time were pretty much what you said. Where I went we had religion every day too. I remember liking the special days that had history and science. I never did like geography too much.

Cause there are some nsty kids who hurt others by making them a target in those games....

Good afternoon {{{{{Starry}}}}}}}}

Yes, there are. Just like life when one grows up. :)

Hope you are having a great one. It is still not bad here. Got a tad cooler but ok.

Yes, we certainly made some kids targets. Of course the tables turned and we became the target. It was all in good fun. Kids who couldn't take it weren't allowed to play. It was that simple. We also made bottle top guns in the summer and snow forts in the winter and had battles. We had bows and arrows and pop guns too. Strange that there's more violence now than then.
