The rivers here rarely freeze over because of the traffic. My great-grandmother told me about the times when the river would freeze over and people walked across the river from St. Louis to East St. Louis.

I can remember the bad winters, rarely have a lot of frozen ice around here any more.

That must have been something. At least lake Micigan didn't freeze over. We did have ice in the harbor and there were some warnings given that now that it is melting and breaking up there were some "icebergs"out there... Of course nothing like the ones in the ocean.

The winter we've had here this year reminds me quite a bit of bad winters we had back in the late 70s.

We have been spoiled where I am for years.

When I was a kid we probably missed 2 weeks a year of school because of snow. Never had to have makeup days either, we seemed to catch up nicely without them.

We had lots of snow days when I was a child too. Perhaps the "formula" for the state assistance to the local schools has changed....

When I was a kid we didn't get a snow day! In fact when I started teaching the 70s snow days were rare indeed. So rare that teachers often went in just to get caught up. (I was a kid long before you were.)

and Teachers unions.......

Not here!

No doubt!

Perhaps!

Grins.... But not by all that much.

I think it was safer walking to school and back then everyone in the district walked to school. If it was really cold, we bundled up and went anyway. My parents never thought it was too cold to go to work so we had to go to school.

Yes it was safer walking to school then. I walked a mile to grade school 2-8th grade and a mile and a half to high school. If "Arthur" read below 10 degrees my Mom or Dad would take us to high school.

I remember one time when Mom checked and the Catholic high school was announcing it was still open even though the public schools were closing so Dad dropped me of. By the time I got there they had closed too.

They were informed by me and then my Father that they had to get me home, and do it within an hour according to him as they announced they were open.

They did get me home. I don't know what leverage he had...

That happened to me as well as other teachers.
