Do we count as Bohemians?

It's worth noting that "hippie" was a media invention, and was very rarely a self-applied label. I think most of the original hippies didn't see themselves as needing a label, and just did their thing without worrying what they should be called.

For the first three, hippies plus anyone else who preferred acid (you might also have included Blake and Friedrich.) Wilde wasn't a visual artist, so I'm not sure which engraver you mean.

H

Uh duh! I meant the dude who did the engravings for Wilde's books. Got hassled for their 'sensuality'. :D The name escapes me. :(

You might be Bahamians. It's a fine distinction, and you should probably be evaluated by experts.

So was Beatnik. Herb Cohn from the San Fran Chronicle coined it, Before that they were the Beat generation, a word Kerouac puckishly claimed to have derived from "beatitude". No beat called themselves a beatnik, or a beat for that matter. They were just "the scene" or "The crowd".

The original beat generation comprised the underworld as well, as Genet saw them. Burroughs especially cultivated petty thieves and junkies as well as homosexuals, who are all criminals by definition back then. Gergory Corso, the great beat poet, received his only education in the Tombs in New York. Neal Cassady was an inveterate auto thief.

You know, reading this thread, I realize I've never been a part of a recognizable social phenomena. :(

Except the Boomers and I burned my membership in that ages ago.

No doubt that's because you'd never stoop so low as to be a part of any group, movement, or social phenomena that would have you. :)

Rumple Foreskin

It's more polite to blame the Scots, who enjoy being troublemakers more than anyone else...

H

Someone mention Scotland?

Trouble? We just don't like terrorists. John Smeaton for President!

Well...this is no place for me...and I well know that...however....ahem...

In context, the 'Beatniks', an outgrowth of the Bohemian left of Europe, be it in Paris, or London or Lisbon, or Marcellais (sp) the , 'cote d'azure' playground of the Med...were all, the 'cafe' socialists left over from the dismayed '30's and the, 'hot jazz' twenties of the Paris scene.

Ya, know the Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Wilde, Maughm, generation of disenfranchised, bitter, intellectuals.

This is not a thesis, thus I pick and choose, cherry pick, if you must.

Handprints...the 'Beats' were not jazz people, just druggies who found solace in Coltrane and company, whose music could only be listened to in a drug induced halllucinogenic state of mind.

Nor was it intimate knowledge of the minutiea, of the LSD generation, but a desperate search of something to belief in, something to follow, adapt or adopt, a true, 'lost' generation, having rejected all tradition and convention and dreaming, hoping, praying, without a source to pray to, for salvation from actually thinking.

I could offer more, but I tire of this. Suffice it to say. I fully realize that those of you with your roots in the absolutely inane and worthless generation of the sixties, cannot face the fact that indeed, all yiour knowledge and experience is totally worthless and of no interest save trivia, qua, the Victorians.

A shame you have infected your children...and...in the case of some, the business world with that moldy, oldy and not goldy upbringing.

But then...you are the soon to be 'boomers' and will soon pass from influence.

The world will recover from your disastrous generation. Trust me.

Lay down and open wide...

Amicus...

Beardsley?

For bonus points, you should write from an opium bed, one of you should occasionally wear a fez and paisley dressing gown while housecleaning, hang a few pictures of Eastern European philosophers/entomologists in the entrance hall, and keep a CD of Uzbeki folk tunes playing at dinner parties. At that point, I won't be able to distinguish yours from the house I grew up in...
Did you just say "housecleaning"?

Oh, what a giveaway!

Do you count as Bohemians?

Probably not very well. As a group, Bohemians are severely numerically challenged.

Everybody knows that... :D
