So you love musicals and you can't keep your mouth shut?

This just keeps getting better.

I like some musicals, but I lived in a place that considered monster-truck racing to be culture, so I don't have much experience.

I liked Les Mis (best overall music), 1776 (just fun), the song "One Night in Bangkok" from Chess and "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the opera, and of course, "A funny thing happened on the way to the forum."

But I was also the only one waiting in line to buy tickets for "Freddy vs. Jason," a movie I'd waited a DECADE to see.

But Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat really blows.

What about "Jesus Christ, Superstar"?

Camelot, of course, ruled.

Amen, brother. Or sister. I've never been quite clear.

Have you listened to / seen "Miss Saigon"? I actually liked the ending better before they "fixed" it, but it's still good.

(And if you like both musicals and murder, you really, really must see "Sweeney Todd.")

Not familiar with either. I wish they'd release more broadway performances on DVD, rather than the movie versions thereof.
Sigh. I remember watching the play (not movie) "Camelot" on HBO when I was younger. I miss that . . .

"Sweeney Todd" is available in what looks like a "star cast" version on DVD from Amazon, but should not be confused with the non-musical movie of the same name. It's a good performance; even as a diehard fan of the Lansbury version that circulated on A&E a decade or more ago, I found this newer DVD very good.

Vengeance-crazed barber murdering customers while pie-shop lady downstairs disposes of the bodies in the most pragmatic of all possible fashions - what's not to like? If you like black humor, the song where they run through reams of puns about who's being eaten in the pies is worth the cost in itself.

Speaking of "eating" and "musicals," I think I would be remiss in bringing up "Little Shop of Horrors."
:D

YES! How did I forget that? I must have watched the movie version half a hundred times, although I know that it many ways it's not the greatest. I think that I can still sing the dentist song all the way through. That's one great show.

If people didn't realize how talented Steve Martin was by the time that movie was over, then nothing will. Heathens.

still very happy* that I got to see Richard Harris do that role live...that and having seen Yul Bryner as the King of Siam are pretty damn good memories as far as theatre goes...

*edited to say: WTF, how about "still pretty fucking thrilled" ! I guess I still have my workplace "don't show any highs or lows" attitude in place.... (just got home a little bit ago)

Hmmm. I would offer "Roxanne" as a last attempt to cure their ignorance. But yes - he was brilliant.

(Edited to add: Oh dear. Now it's in my head. "You'll be a dentist / You have a talent for causing things pain / So be a dentist / People will pay you to be inhumane ...")

great play, good movie: but it had it's spots where it did some things the stage could not...the "motown" girls walking through the rain but not getting wet is one example....

That's sort of one reason I've never bought into the "It wasn't like the book" criticism which could also be applied to movie/play crossovers. Different mediums have different restrictions, so many such comparisons are unfair. You seem to be able to appreciate each for what they bring to the table. I wish more people could do that.

ah, but you have to use your brain to do that....most people don't seem to do much of that...(pretty cynical tonight. rough day of dealing with multiple idiots...)

I understand. After dealing with my moving company, miscellaneous cable people (I still have an uneasy feeling about that) and surviving my first day of work, I'm ready to pull my hair out.

that could take a while judging by the AV....

first Monday after a holiday is always rough in my profession, even when the holiday is on a weekend. so I am pretty burnt out.

Damn, sorry I missed this (and hope that the Alpaca sleeps well).

The Beckett On Film project is an excellent example of people taking works to a new medium and doing wonderful things with it. Their performance of "Play" is quite simply one of the most remarkable things I have ever seen.
