DVDs seen recently

I've got Manhunter playing in the background, but it's more for setting atmosphere than viewing.

I watched 'Ice Age' with the kids for the fifth? time yesterday. Still cracks me up.

Never noticed before that the baby gives a Vulcan salute as he slides past the spaceship.

Last night, we watched the BBC Miniseries "Tipping the Velvet" ... loved the book and the series was really well done.

Now we're going to settle in to watch V is for Vendetta ... I'm interested to see how it holds up to the original comic miniseries.

We saw three French movies this week.

Amelie :) :) :) :)
What an offbeat treat!

Nathalie :) :)
When a woman finds out her husband has been unfaithful, she hires a prostitute to seduce him and report back to her. I didn't even see the ending coming, even though it made sooo much sense.

A Very Long Engagement :) :) :)
After the first World War, a determined young woman looks for her presumably dead fiance, unraveling a handful of intrigues in the process.

Penelope, if you want to see another interesting movie by the same director try La Cité des enfants perdus

Were all those by the same director? ETA: Ok, I see two were. Shows how much I pay attention to credits! Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have a look, but just now we're all subtitled out! Madagascar is next.

But I'm a Cheerleader

Quirky and fairly low budget, but it's totally charming. It's one of those rare movies that delivers for both lesbians and gay guys. The story, as the title suggests, is about a cheerleader, who's suddenly confronted in a big gathering of her her friends and family about her seuxality.

It takes her totally by surprise, as she's never considered it before. She ends up being packed off to this Christian camp that 'cures' gay teens. All the guys dress in blue suits, and all the girls have to wear pink dresses. Amid chants of, 'God is great! God is straight!", all the students are assigned gender-oriented tasks. The girls are taught things like cooking, while the guys are taught how to chop wood by a guy with the sexiest arse. The 'correction' courses finishes with an assessment in 'simulated sex', where male and female students are paired off and padded up so that they can roll and grunt on top of each other, and show that they realise that this is what men and women are meant to do.

But of course, while she's around all those lesbians, the cheerleader makes some interesting discoveries about herself.

You can see it all coming a mile off, but that's probably what makes it so enjoyable. You're always several steps ahead of the heroine, and watching her struggle through the various stages is hilarious.

It's a real feel-good film that plays around in your mind for a long time after.

5/5 :nana:

If you like the I-have-testosterone-and-I-wear-a-suit-and-i'm-a-good-guy-but-now-my-family-is-in-trouble type of thriller where the same things seems to happen again and again and again, then you will enjoy this.

Personally the only part of this movie I enjoyed was looking at Virginia Madsen's eyes

The Magdelene Sisters ~ Women were forced into service in church-run Magdalene Laundries for having children out of wedlock, being raped, or just plain looking like they might get into trouble. The last one was only closed in 1996. Sad, scary and downright terrifying what has been done to women in history. This is part of our history that I think we have to be aware of.

I really liked this movie and I'm not gay or a lesbian, just a guy who likes a good romance (seriously, not gay). You are right in that it is a feel good movie, but whenever I watch it now I am saddened by what happened to Natasha Leone, what a waste. :(

Oh and it was driving me nuts where I knew the one girl from (not Natasha) until I caught a running of The Faculty on cable, and a big "Oh so that's where!" from me.

Ultra Violet.

My fucking God. I love the director/writer's other work, but this movie just plain sucked. Not even Mila Jovovich's leather clad and gratiutously in-camera ass could save this flick.

Lewis Black and Mitch Fatel comedy.
Dear God, it's been a while since I laughed so hard.

She's hot in and out of everything. Damn. I usually go for girls with bigger chests, but her breasts are damn near perfect, and she's lean and athletic.

Makes my mouth water.

I watched Firefly when it was first aired on Fox and thought it was an interesting show and made an effort to tape each episode. It was hard to get into though because, as I know now, Fox showed the episodes out of order and didn't show a few of them at all.

So anyway, I liked the show enough to get the DVD's and also I wanted to watch Serenity but not until I had seen every episode of Firefly and they were fresh in my mind. Boy am I glad I did that! I just finished watching everything and all I can say is, HOLY FUCKING SHIT THAT WAS GOOD!!! Memorable quotes in just about every episode and then capping it off with the movie...WOW!!!

I can't recommend these DVD's enough, it's part western, part science fiction, and even part horror, if you are a fan of any or all of these genres, then I promise you, you will be in for a real treat.

For those that are familiar with the series, I'd have to say Jayne is my favorite character but I really like all of them, maybe I like Kaylee and Simon a little less than the others. I love River, she has fewer lines but almost every single one is golden. I love Shepard Books' spirtuality and the triumvirate of Mal/Zoe/Wash. I thought the chemistry between Mal and Inora was kind of forced and wasn't too crazy about their scenes together, but, my God is Inora beautiful and I thought her character was very interesting and liked her storylines aside from the parts that had to show Mal was jealous. Simon is ok, nothing special, but in episodes that his character is heavy in the plot, like Safe and Ariel, the writing made him interesting enough that I really enjoyed them.

I never liked Buffy or Angel, so this is my first Joss Whedon series, but he is definitely a talented writer/director. I am very interested to see what he does with the upcoming Wonder Woman movie

Just watched "The Cave". Interesting movie although the ending wasn't all that inspired. If you have a free night this might be a good one to watch.

The Saint with Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue....very cool (plus she's very hot).

National Lampoon's Barely Legal. A wonderful discussion of the issues involved in high school kids trying to break into the sex film industry.
