DVDs seen recently

Bound - It was alright, but I don't think I'd sit through it again.

Sense & Sensibility - Very good. Funny and heartwarming.

Impromptu - Had some really strong characters but the plot was not enough to make me want to own it.

The Perfect Man - Fun for families with teenage (or younger) girls.

Dangerous Beauty - An absolutely wonderful movie that I will have to own.

I lurve Netflix.com

I saw "Charley and the Chocolate Factory" recently and was impressed. I'll either endear myself to or completely annoy both camps by saying that it was one of the only remakes that left me feeling that both movies were very good in their own way. I'd always loved the old version with Gene Wilder, and I also enjoyed the Depp/Burton collaboration. Very different, but also very good, I thought. And of course the book's another thing as well. I like the way that all three present different versions of the central theme, and highlight different aspects.

The only thing I didn't like in the most recent one was the music with the songs. I found it distracting; it was difficult to figure out what the lyrics were.

And Stella, for point out your Depp post. I did lose it in the page flip, but am delighted to have been redirected to it.

Did anyone see Garden State? I heard it was really good.

It was an interesting, funny and witty film. Definetely worth the price of a rental.

I recently watched O Brother Where Art Thou? again, and was reminded of just how damn funny that movie is. Recommend it, but you have to watch it from start to finish, or you won't get most of the jokes.

Stellallalla! Totally agree with you about Depp (and most everything). And: Don Juan DeMarco, Secret Window, The Man Who Cried, Ed Wood (Depp in angora! woo woo woo).

Is it good?

I had to listen to my sister going on and on about it, and since she and I have parted ways (not completely, just in child-rearing issues, politics, values and finances) I grew annoyed listening to her gush.

If you enjoyed it - I'll give it a go.

oh good, I don't feel so all alone now :)
Mort is the funniest character- just watching him take a nap is entertaining! and that one is written by.. um... fuck, I can't remember- oh yeah, Stephen King :D

Have you seen "Arizona Dream"? What a surprise that one was! I had no idea, I thought it would be trash, It wasn't. besides Johnny, it has Jerry Lewis, Faye Dunaway... Iggy doesn't apear in it, but he sings the title song.

If you're in a mood for slightly chickie films-
"Down With Love" is hysterical. It's nearly as funny as "Some Like It Hot"
Four Weddings and a Funeral" is the best thing Hugh Grant ever did or ever will.
Vintage-
Anything with Marilyn Monrie in it is a sure bet! And "The Misifts" will make you bawl like a baby. It will.
I don't know, there are so many good things to watch out there...

Don't forget "Kung Fu Hustle"- I could watch that one ten more times before I get tired of it

I watched "O brother where art thou" at around 3am one night whilst heavily pregnant and experiencing them there branston pickly contraction thingies.

Dispite being tired, in pain and the size of a whale, unable to get comfortable, I loved that film. It is a little slow to get going but you have to stick with it, it's a gigglefest and a half!

We watch alot of kids DVD's here. I have to say Madagascar is great, I've watched it a billion or so times now and I still find it funny. Shrek is also good, shrek 2 not so much so but still good. All wtchable over and over again without sustaining too much brain damage.

My sister watched "war of the worlds" the other night and was of the same opinion as me -what a waste of a good few hours of life!! I give Tom his due, I thought he was pretty convincingin his role, but oh, what a dumb film!

thank god I wasn't the only one!! 30 minutes, and I turned it off... my 12 yo watched it at his dad's and swore it got better, but I couldn't stand to watch another minute...

The last thing we rented that I enjoyed was "Cinderella Man." But I like things based on "real life"...

March of the Penguins was way more documentary than I thought it was going to be, but it held my attention...

Fantastic Four was a little bit of a disappointment... not as good as some of the comic book movies out there...

Did anyone see Dark Water, the Exorcism of Emily Rose or The Island?

I'm waiting for Wallace & Gromit and Tim Burton's Corpse Bride to come out on DVD...

Dark Water I thought was wretched; endless scenes of housing projects, plot holes aplenty and little real suspense.

Exorcism of Emily Rose was a decent way to spend an hour and a half, although it had a made for TV feel to it.

I'll second the Equillibrium endorsements and throw in a mention of Dark City, which I love. :)

On a DVD related front, although I have an aversion to subtitled movies (I find it difficult to read and watch the actors at the same time as they speak-facial expressions and other nuances) I recently bought "Romance" and thought it was interesting, so I went and got a few more films by the director, Catherine Breillat.

My questions are... is anyone else familiar with this woman's work, and am I supposed to enjoy these films (especially A Real Young Girl) as much as I do? An absolutely fascinating director, but these films are very very blunt.

Also, David Lynch's 'Eraserhead' just came out on DVD, and while I could never recommend anybody beside myself actually buying it, you might want to give it a rental.

You'll love it. :)

but, like I said, you have to pay attention, because some of the stuff you see early on makes the jokes later on.

The music is also top-notch.

Aboslutely, positively, yes! But, as it's been said, you need to watch it all in one go or you miss out.

The first time i watched it was in the middle of the night. i woke everybody else up laughing. :D Went out and bought the soundtrack the next day. Drove everybody nuts with lines from the movie for weeks.

Then the resident asshole watched it.

He went out and bought the soundtrack to keep in his truck. We both drove people nuts with lines from the movie, until they all gave in and watched it.

Life is good.

I loved the little girls - George Clooney's daughters. :D

Sarah, watch it. You won't be disappointed.

Another one of my favorites - "Excuse me, but some of your foldin' money's flying out the window."

It's one of the few movies I've seen that lived up to the hype. Definitely worth watching over again.

I don't really care for George Clooney, but he was perfect in this.

And, Sarah? With your frog fetish you've got goin' on at the moment, you REALLY need to see it. ;)
