Endless Curiosity

Relationships. What is important? Most say personality and humor. Some say appearance. To toss financial considerations onto the list is considered shallow, like heading up your 'must haves' with big breasts.

Money is a requirement to life, however. Where do finances rank on your list?

My list?

Hard to say. I don't think I ever made a list. Probably should have, considering where I ended up.

I can't really answer. I've only had one relationship and I've always made more money. It is what it is.

I agree with most of what was said above. It's not the amount of money, but a common attitude toward it and how it should be spent. I rarely spend money on myself, but I'm a big gift giver. I love to see people smile. And I take the boys on vacations whenever they let me. Usually road trips or adventure vacations.

And the whole SAHM thing? That's a bigger contribution than money, in my opinion. I truly admire people who can do that and make the financial sacrifice required. Sometimes the day care costs are more expensive than the take home salary and it makes sense from that perspective as well.

As I look back at 72...

Glad my X stayed at home; 4 damn good kids, grandkids coming on. I do all I can for the grandkids, want them to have mama as close as possible. We were poor as hell, junk cars, no vacations or eating out. Meant nothing. Thats what it was like to teach in the late 70's. We had unexpected twins, lol.

I'm gonna say the same as everyone else.

Except in a relationship, financial acumen does not rank as high as her personality, her intelligence and how hot she is to me. My so and I have been married for 21 years and financially, we're not the best. At the same time, we're happy. The kids are grown and the daughter is better with her finances just because she has seen all the things we did.

I'll echo many others in saying that volume of income isn't an issue for me, but care with finances is. I couldn't cope with someone who was either recklessly extravagent or unduly stingy. I'm lucky that tinglebliss sees the value of a cup of tea made with love and affection as greater than that of diamond rings or other frippery (in other words, she's a cheap date ;)).

On a related topic, I'm Curious as to the ways different couples manage their finances: Are you a single or double income household? Does one make a lot more than the other? One household checking account with two signers or separate accounts? Does one partner take charge? How do you handle discretionary spending? How often do you have money conversations?

  1. Double income
  2. It varies
  3. Joint account
  4. No - it's a shared responsibility
  5. If it's significant, then we talk about it beforehand
  6. We review where we are every month or so
  7. Lemon drizzle

- At the moment, single income.
- Earning power has flipped back and forth, but my SO has earned more for some time.
- One checking account with two signers.
- Dual. I’ve always handled the daily finances, spending and budgeting. My SO handles portfolios.
- We don’t sweat small personal expenditures, larger ones are discussed.
- Both security oriented types, so we talk about money on a fairly regular basis.

As a bonus, we rarely fight about money. The occasional quibble is my SO’s personal spending. He is something of a hobbyist, and he gets on these little obsessional jags.

Lately, even that bone of contention is declining. My schedule has been overloaded this last year. I’ve been having him take over some of the more mundane financial chores. Aside from some pungent commentary on my part when I check in (the whole point of a budget is that one sticks to the budget!), things are going smoothly. Actually having to deal with the money on a daily basis seems to have quelled his interest in spending.

As others have said, I think it matters less how much you each have/earn/spend/whatever, and more that you are comfortable with each other's attitudes and habits. If you have wildly different attitudes, I imagine it could be a source of conflict.

Our is all held jointly, although it's complicated by a split between personal/business, and we bring in the same, because of our professional arrangements. My man is only interested as far as 'do we have enough to do the things we want to do?' :D We do talk about it occasionally, certainly once a year with an accountant for tax etc, but to be honest, it doesn't come up that often, or need to, really.

Separate accounts. I have the bills I'm responsible for (most of them since I make more) she has hers.

Don't much care what she spends her money on so long as she gets her bills paid. She extends me the same courtesy.

Had a great deal. 50/50 on everything. On vacation, I bought the gas and she got the motel. Cant recall how we paid for food, but since I trusted her in all things, twas no problem.

To me money isn't a requirement. Sure, having some would be great. I'm not looking for a sugar momma. A woman who lives comfortably or around that level is fine by me.

And I couldn't help but think of a quote from the movie "So I married an Axe Murderer"

Sorry - I bit late, but here goes!

When I first met MF, I was attracted to his sense of humour, our funny walk together and the way we both could wind up our friend. We could communicate without saying anything and get into trouble! When we started going out we got to know how we both ticked. As we had to travel to see each other mainly at weekends, that's when I realised what he meant to me. The financial side came later and yes, I'm very happy with a cup of tea than a diamond ring! ;)

On the 'cup of tea rather than a diamond ring' theme, I was once walking through an airport shopping area, and I saw a whole stand of MagLites. I love MagLites, they're so ... shiny and stuff, so many sizes, colours, all those ... lumens. So I went to have a look. My man thought it was hilarious that I'd barged past all the jewellery stands to get there without giving any of them so much as a glance. :D

Dating. It's often feast or famine. Once you're taken it seems like other possibilities start coming out of the woodwork. Why is that? And do you find the same to be true for Lit?

How true....

But such fun. Last week, two turned me down, but 2 said "yes." Took me over a year to wind down a loving relationship, but yet the game goes one...

There's no rhyme or reason to the feast and famine. Lit is ALWAYS fun, and full of potential.

I don't find that to be true. But I have a weird relationship with dating, in that I've never really done it in the traditional sense. Everyone I met, I met online. And it's not like it was an accident. When I spend time on sites like this one, I meet people. When I spend my online time on gaming sites or facebook, I don't. To me it's not a function of being taken or not, it's a function of where I put myself.

Been married for years and can't claim to have seen a single real life possibility other than my wife. Nor any before that, for that matter.

As for being taken on lit...nope, I'd say the possibilities are about the same. Probably a little less, even. I have a big "no cyber, no play" line in my profile (which is more or less the same as being attached) and people seem to generally respect that. *shrug*

I think this is more how the human brain works. I have rented an apartment then felt like I see cheaper, better apartments everywhere after signing the lease. Bought a car then immediately wanted a different one. Second guessing, and focusing on the possibilities we can't have, is likely how we're wired in general. I can't personally claim to be that way about relationships though.

I'm going to have to disagree with the thesis posed in the question. I haven't noticed receiving any propositions since being taken, and I'd be surprised if any did come in my direction. What has changed for me since getting married is that women seem to feel safer about approaching me for friendship, especially when they discover that tinglebliss isn't the type to feel threatened by that. One of the benefits to me of settling down was that I became more comfortable in my own skin and more certain of myself. I think that authenticity comes across well, whether in real life or on Lit. In any case, it's a change that I welcome with open arms. :)

LOL. In real life it was mostly famine. Never really "feast." I don't recall ever actually juggling multiple women.

At Lit, I've met a number of wonderful women that I've had some wonderful discussions with. I wouldn't say "feast", but I certainly wouldn't say "famine."
Mostly I've made some great friends.

My Litster, so nice. Met up, her territory, loved it. Now we are taking a vacation way the hell up in NE>

Two for one since yesterday was one of my marathon work days.

On the money thing, we will be two income until later this month when I leave my second job. The decisions to be two jobs was made after losing a job back in 2009 so we could recover. We share a bank account where she watches it and I work for it. She makes most of the financial day to day decisions. We talk about money a bunch.

I think a significant other is the best attraction phenomenon on the planet. A guy walking arm in arm with a girl seems to attract other girls. Just the way it is I think. ;)
