"You're pretty." I've never understood the impulse to compliment a woman's - or man's - looks. What are you complimenting? The gifts nature bestowed upon someone? Something they never had control over? I find this the laziest compliment. Instead, tell me I'm intriguing, beguiling, esoteric, or entertaining. Put some effort into it.

When I tell a woman that she is beautiful, something as simple as appearance is very far down the list of what I am describing.
But... if they say... "you know, you are pretty stinky" that's okay? One does have control over that...

Agreed. But I prefer those compliments come from someone I'm in a relationship with. Then they strike a chord and sound authentic; that's when they resonate.I hear you on this. I can describe a picture in those terms, and mean only that. But describing the sea, or a sunset, or someone I care for as "beautiful?" Far more exhaustive, maybe even holistic. Mind, humor, soul, personality, heart, warmth -- the entirety of what makes you "you." The infinite and unique. I don't ever use the word lightly -- it has too much behind it.
