If anyone talks to her I have a suggestion if he's not in the best burn unit...call a local shriners group and get him to a shriners burn hospital. The shriners will help pay for her to be there as well. I'll just say from personal experience the hell of hospitals not being the best for childrens burns is well worth switching to one who is.

The Shriners are the best!
Please call them FTF- there is no need for your son to go through what he is because of a doctor trying to be a GOD!
Thoughts and prayers are with you.
One thought, did you try him on yogurt tubes? Yogurt is easy on the tummy and comes in freeze type tubes up here. If he needs anything or you need anything let us know.

I finally had to tell the doctor that either he took the damn tube out or I picked up my kid and walked out. he did NOT come to the best burn unit in the area to be tortured mentally while going through hell physically. The tube came up and instantly his breathing improved, his heart rate dropped and his temperature dropped. Not to mention the screamig shut off like someone hit mute.

The doctor thinks I'm a psychotic overprotective bitch now, and I told him he was a condescending asshat in front of a floor fuill of nurses and kids.

Remain the bitch. Do NOT let any doctor/nurse shove you around or torture this kid. If they're going to do something like that, they'd better be able to calmly explain to you why they're doing it and why it's absolutely necessary and why there's no other alternative.

If they can't, then fuck 'em. Doctors should be trusted, to a point, because, presumably, they're the experts. But they're not gods, and patients aren't there to worship them for their doctorhood. Don't let anyone do more damage to that kid for expediency or just because they feel they know best. If it is best, they should be able to tell you why, not ignore you.

It's a terrible thing when a child is in pain, worse I think than when an adult would go through the same thing. Good healing thoughts sent his way and my prayers with both mother and son.

Things are looking up. Here's FTF's note from this morning-

MUCH better today. They think he MIGHT get to go home tomorrow! *fingers crossed* He won't be able to go to school for at least a couple weeks, has to wear hats to keep off the sun and such, has to stay inside and pretty quiet, but I'm PRAYING we can go home soon.

I only have like two seconds. Thank you guys so much!

If he is being considered for release already that is far better than I feared when I first heard about the event... I'm glad his prognosis is so good.

and FTF, I'm glad you stood your ground about the tube and admire you greatly for it.

The whirlpool debriding treatments really hurt. The only time in my life when I was in danger of passing out. However, the physical therapists tried a new debriding treatment, special sheets which I left on my legs for a week and then soaked off. These worked wonders! No pain at all and I have very little scarring, just a few purple patches. My burns were from boiling water, and may react differently than his, but they are definitely worth asking about.

Unfortunately I can't remember the name of these patches. I'll do some research and see if I can track down the name.

Oh, and congratulations on getting to come home. That's wonderful news!

Once you get the kid home and settled in, I would definitely go and have a talk with the busines people who run the hospital. I would be polite, but firm. I would insist that the doctor's methods were way out of line [not necessarily what he wanted to do, but how he went about doing it.] I would then let drop that you would like to settle the matter so that no one else's child has to go through the same thing and that you don't want to involve the newpapers, TV stations, etc.

Latest from FTF-

And I finally got here!

Home again, home again, jiggety-jog.

We got in around 3.30, and then had to go through and sterilize his room, the bathroom, his brothers, the dog and the next door neighbors...

Kidding about the neighbors, we just told them to go home for the next week. Mason can't go outside, can't touch the pets, can't do much of anything boyish for the next five to ten days, but luckily we have tons of coloring books an dpuzzles. His brothers have to be scrubbed and sterilized (hands and such) before they can go into his room. We've told all the well-wishing local friends they have to wait until he's completely healed over until they can come by.

Other than that- we have a lot of ground to cover over the next few weeks. Mason has to have completely seperate everything until his skin closes up- basically, he has a lot of open wounds on his face and arms right now. We had to get him new towels, washcloths, a special soap with no fragrance, dye or added anything. He has to have a high protein, high calorie diet, and he's not allowed to do anything "strenuous." So much for feeding him junk food, letting him sleep witht he dogs in the garage and having him bale hay, right?

We are so thankful and so blessed that we are home, and that so many people have sent so much love, prayers, support and encouragement (Mason adds: "And the cool stuff too, Mom!") to us. I can never thank any of you enough- but thank you, thank you, a million times thank you.

It's good to read that things have improved. The pain from burn injuries is god-awful for adults much less a six year old. FTF and Mason have been troopers.

This is the first I have seen this thread... I should have known the Litizens would get wind of troubles.

Mason is doing well so far. He's still in pain, of course, and he's still far from well, but he's come so far, so fast, I'm trying to keep up. That child is iron and silver- he's that strong and that pure.

We were at Shands in Gainesville for a grand total of 5 days, arriving late Saturday night and leaving yesterday evening. Please don't think they weren't a gret place- they are! There were a few miscommunications between the doctors and I, but things like that happen, and truthfully, it was resolved before any permanent harm could be done. A lot of it had to do with the fact that Mason is the most stubborn and independent child I've ever met, lol, and HE took control of his recovery, which flustered the doctors.

At this point, they don't think there will be much if ANY scarring- maybe a little bit of a "character" scar across the bridge of his nose, but definitely nothing major, and unless something goes drastically wrong in the healing process (infections, re-injury, etc) skin grafts are not a part of our future.

Thank you so much for the love and support- I can honestly say that Mase and I could feel every prayer and every thought- it held us up and kept us pushing forward, even when we both wanted to just stop. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

He knows it too, the little rat- I found Kenny Chesney's "Chicks Dig It" for him and it's his new favorite song.

All of us have character scars, visible or internal. It makes us stronger in the long run. Mason will be fine.

FTF, I'm so glad Mason is home and recovering.

And, although I have absolutely no control or influence in the matter, I'm sorry you had any bad experience in Shands. Shands is a top-notch trauma hospital--anybody who's been burned, stabbed, shot, etc., etc., gets sent there. It's a shame that you had to deal with an asshole doctor. It hurt just to read about Mason having that tube forced on him.
