Feel better about an annual gone bad

I recently went to a new gyno for an annual exam. When I called and made the appointment, the receptionist referred to the doctor as "she" this and "she" that. When I got there, I found out that "she" was in fact a "he". I really prefer a female gyno, but okay...at that point, I couldn't really turn around and walk out, I had waited weeks for this appointment.

When the doctor finally came into the room, he seemed like he was in a major hurry to get finished and get out. I had a built up list of questions and concerns, but was only given a chance to get about half of them out, and ended up feeling very slighted. I was concerned about being given a prescription for bc pills that would be covered by my insurance, but he just hurried me up by saying "oh, most insurance covers most pills." (As it turns out, the prescription he gave me, is not covered by my insurance.)

I wasn't given a breast exam, and during the pap, he did something strange to my cervix which caused heavy bleeding and severe pain for the next 24 hours. I mentioned that I was concerned that I might have a yeast infection, he advised me to get an over the counter creme, without ever checking or anything.

I've seen several doctors within this health organization, and never had such a horrible experience. And I'm wondering if I should be talking to someone within the organization about this experience.

Have you ever had an experience like this? What would you do?

being male...

I have never had such an experience, but I would DEFINATELY file complaints and follow up with a better doc. No excuse for that kind of treatment from someone you are paying.

I agree with Stiffy on this one. Schedule an appointment with another Doctor and tell the receptionist when you call that you want to speak with the office manager. Explain to the office manager what happened and why you would like to be seen by one of the other doctors.

She should be able to get you a very quick appointment.

Even better, put your experience in writing for their files.

Damn, that totally sucks. I agree with everything written before this. Also, make clear to whoever you talk to that you will not hesitate to go to a different health provider if this is not seen through in a prompt and courteous manner.

I'm not usually this much of a bitch, but when it comes to your health, ya gotta throw the smack down sometimes.

... speaking of which, it's about time for my annual appointment... grr...

agreeing with other posts.
it's horrible that you were stuck with a doctor so unprofessional---i think that a lot a doc's time with patients should be spent actually listening to them (not just hearing, but listening).
I hope that you find some recourse and a much better doc in the future.

Jeez...I'm seeing red just reading your post. The experience must have been horrifying. Check with your friends and coworkers to see if they have any gyno recommendations. And i would definitely file a written complaint if i were you. Make sure you tell the new doc's office that you need an appointment right away b/c of the bleeding you experienced from the pap exam.

This "doctor" should be reprimanded for his behavior. An annual exam is NOT a pap smear. It should be about all of your medical concerns, head to toe, physical or not. Fucking prick.

I would definitely file a complaint and immediately ask to see another doctor. I have no idea what that doc did to make you bleed during a pap smear, but he sounds like an ass and should be dealt with swiftly before he does this to someone else.

i had an absolutely horrid experience some years ago, where i was referred to a gynae specialist.
this doc hurt me like you would not believe - when i left his surgery, i could barely walk.
anyway, he was also brusque and insensitive, and while i was lying on his table, he said to me "OH, and your cervix is open, so you've probably lost the baby."
no explanations, no compassion, just loads of physical and emotional pain.
and then had the gall to charge me $200 for the consult!

i refused to pay and every 6 months i get a letter from the collection agency requesting the money.
last one i got, i wrote FUCK YOU, TAKE ME TO COURT and posted 'return to sender'.

i say speak up and let this organisation know that you felt humiliated and dismissed, and request a different doctor.

Report that doctor to everybody you can find. In writing. Start with the doctor himself and work your way up to the medical association. File formal complaints. Write down everything you can remember. And then follow up with everything.

Demand to be listened to. If he has a busy practice, he's treating at least two or three women a day in exactly the same way. Maybe more. Enough complaints? His attitude will change when his license is threatened.

god i'm so glad that i live in the uk.........
people may moan about the national health but it doesn't sound that bad....

i certainly would complain...and insist on seeing a female from now on

File a complaint.
I work within the "Tricare" system (yes, vile thing it is some days) and filing a complaint is the ONLY way to get anything done unless you're friends with the chief of the hospital.
Demand a formal appology for his insufferable treatment, or lack there of. This is more then unproffesional, its unethical and in violation of the hippocratic oath all docs take!
Its BS- you should never be treated like that. File a formal written complaint and let them know you've an extra copy to CC over to a lawyer (even if you don't have a laywer) if they fail to make ammends.

DEFINITELY, report this Dr. to his superior, and get a new doc immediately.

I know they are pressed for time thanks to managed care. I have been told when making the appts. for my annual or whatever type of visit, let the receptionist know so that she can book more time for me.

Good luck!
