Firefly Nerdery OOC Brainstorm [CLOSED]

Hello Ladies, and any lurking gents.

I'm not going to be here for much longer - I have an appointment to attend soon :(

Anyway, for this kind of thread, I would prefer to see the universe used as is, in a Post Serenity movie time line with original characters.

The characters themselves, I would like them to have a similar overall dynamic similar to the Firefly canon crew. Namely, they are an extended family, without many blood ties. Some of the crew are linked to each other tighter than others, they have their moments of disagreement and getting under each other's skin - in the not so good sense, as well as the naughtier ways.

As an idea, the crew can be newly formed in whatever manner, but they are all together initially with a common goal or purpose. Again, there will be those who know each other before hand, and those who come in new. We can establish the links that initially bind them, then let in game play do the rest. It would give us all that freedom to create the kinds of characters we want, then mold them that little bit more to make them fit into the greater whole.

Oh, and we don't have to have the same precise mix of archetypes in the crew either. Trying to mirror the mix would be an enormous pain in the arse.

There you go, an initial ramble for you all to pull apart.

This is actually exactly what I think we all have in mind. I mean, I can't speak for Vail, but I think she was just treading carefully on things that were leap-frogging Whedon canon.

I also really like the idea of keeping the Mandarin intact. I know, what a pain the ass, but that's what translators are for...

I do wonder how the less than vanilla stuff would work with a crew that's close, though. I mean, obviously you could explore, so and so's always wanted to blah blah blah. What else? Forced reaction? Surprise or unexpected? That could be fun.

Well, the captain could always be a sadistic mofo... Although... that's not very Firefly like...

That's not really conducive to the whole "they're close" thing, somehow.
That's true, too. I dunno. The surprise thing, unexpected, could work. We could also have some NPCs, I guess, I think that could be interesting if done right...

It's not really a story conducive to the less vanilla aspect of things....

They're close because the Captain whips them all the time! They're too scared to talk. Haahahaha. Ah. Anyway.

I mean, you could also have someone kinda.. Jane-like. Not too close with the crew, although he's definitely part of it. Maybe the reason is just because he's a sadistic fuck, and people are uncomfortable with him when he's not... taking out his frustrations on them...

Could do, could do.

Tomorrow I'll talk to Vail and see if she agrees with M13's whole bit, because I think that sums it up pretty neatly.

M13 will have more to add in a minute or five, once the thoughts settle themselves down into something more coherent, now I am back from my appointment with the wielders of red tape.

Firefly 'Verse - Post Miranda

The broadcast of the last of the survey team across the cortex, uncensored and unrestricted, sent huge shock waves through the entire population. How that population reacted to it, differed greatly on where the population was located.

The Core Worlds, the reaction was mixed. The people were shocked that the government failed so dramatically in what they were doing. Not that they tried. Still, there were people who disagreed with the plan in total, and argued hard for those responsible to be censured, and new people elevated to positions of power to clean up the mess left by the incumbents. Others, argued it was a complete fabrication, or a gross manipulation of the truth meant to destabilize the government for someone's political gains. Protests of various natures occurred through the Core worlds, with the population generally take one of two sides; supporting the incumbents, or seeking their removal.

Outside the core worlds, the anger was stronger, furious in the worlds and moons that suffered Reaver raids. That the government they didn't want had created the monsters, then denied their existence was too much much for some. Local garrisons came under attack from insurgents, a few smaller units destroyed by troops wearing Brown Coats had a lot of people worried, excited or both. With the military assets devoted to keeping control over the core worlds, the outer territories started feeling the effects of increased banditry, piracy, Reaver raids and general lawlessness.

The gains seen in the Unification War were slowly disappearing, and opportunities for those with the courage, skills and assets to do what was needed, or gain from the opportunities presented, saw many small groups move to fill all manner of niches. Some worked to aid a greater cause; repairing the fractures of the Miranda Scandal, throwing off the oppressive rule of a hated government. A few spoke of raids to Miranda to reclaim a wealth of items that have been lying around untouched due to the overwhelming numbers of Reavers, who had now been culled somewhat.

Alliance Loyalists have walked from their previous posts, most not wanting anything to do with them anymore. Others sickened by what they know join the various groups that seek to overthrow the Government. Others who were neutral have cast their lot with one side or the other, while others have openly shown their deep held allegiances. Chaos threatens to break free everywhere, and make the Unification War look like children playing make believe soldiers.

Another delightful ramble for people to pick apart again.

And you live up to what I've heard. That's wonderful, and I love it. It really sets up so many possibilities... It's a good base, I think, and would be fun to be build off of.

Well, for me, it's all a logical progression of the events of the Movie. The people in power have lost the confidence of the people... well enough confidence that the power mongers will start trying to make things better for themselves. That breeds all manner of problems in the important planets and moons, which in turn pulls the loyal military units into power consolidation mode. Some units will openly mutiny, some individuals will flee, or just outright resign.

I have played through, as a Game Master and as a player, these kind of scenarios lots of times at different scales, and at different levels. Mainly because the scope of options is enormous.

As for the crew on the ship, there are three essential roles required. Captain, pilot and engineer. After that, general crew, fighters, medical, extra pilots & engineers. How they inter-connect, that's a different task all together figuring that out. But then, I look at that as being more a fun thing to do than a task.

And that makes complete sense. I've never thought about what happened after the movie, and when I tried today, I found myself at a loss, so I'm impressed that you were able to. It does seem like the natural progression, one hundred percent, the power plays and struggles, it's definitely accurate, to me.

I think that, in this scenario, a mercenary type like Jane is more essential than you say, though. While I understand that without a pilot and an engineer, there's no ship, and without the captain, there's no order, without a fighter, in this universe, there's no survival. Maybe it's not of the same importance, but it's definitely up there, in my mind.

And I definitely agree, it's not a task. Especially considering the writers interested in the thread, it's going to be a lot of fun working out the details and the kinks and relationships.

I also wouldn't worry about sex. Those relationships will happen or not and forcing them just gets in the way of story
(Oh yes, I found your secret Firefly thread!)

Agreed. I might have more constructive things when I wake up more lol

Discovering one of your crew is a spy for the Alliance would certainly bring out the darker predilections in someone. If you don't want the Alliance to know you'd caught on to them you'd have to bring the person under some kind of control.

Specific circumstances can make more extreme measures much more acceptable. I don't think any of the crew would have argued with Mal at the end of the hospital episode when he almost dumped Jayne out the airlock.

Didn't mean to intrude, but Firefly is always interesting and whether I was a part of it or not I just wanted to add this.

An Alliance spy would be a good twist. It's always good to have little plot drivers woven into the mix. But that does go along with each character having their own agenda and what they hope to gain out of being a crew member.

And I think mercenaries will be important, too. Fighters are definitely needed, especially if we operate in a time frame M13 put out there

Yeah I'm sorry, I meant to send it to you!

And I know, me and Lily were just talking about it on YIM and it came up. I actually could care less about that part, as long as I get to write a Firefly story.

NOW. To get to all the stuff I missed while sleeping instead of thinking about a Firefly thread (what's wrong with me?!).
