As for the crew on the ship, there are three essential roles required. Captain, pilot and engineer. After that, general crew, fighters, medical, extra pilots & engineers. How they inter-connect, that's a different task all together figuring that out. But then, I look at that as being more a fun thing to do than a task.

Again, there will be those who know each other before hand, and those who come in new. We can establish the links that initially bind them, then let in game play do the rest. It would give us all that freedom to create the kinds of characters we want, then mold them that little bit more to make them fit into the greater whole.
Just something I noticed in M13s listing...it sounded like an awful lot of characters. That may have been unintentional, but I do feel that anything much more than, say, half-a-dozen players becomes problematic.
Also, for ship name: Mike

My two cents:
I think M13 has a great point in terms of the archetypes needed to tell a coherent ship-based story. The benefit of a ship-based story is that the confined space forces interaction and requires less deus ex machina in order to get the characters together.
Each character is going to need his or her own reasons for being on the ship, and obviously the ship will need a captain. Thinking about Firefly, other important things to have are a pilot; an engineer to keep the whole thing running on a steady diet of coat hangers and bubblegum; a "face", to conduct business with the locals (and not coincidentally to get the crew into all sorts of trouble); a doctor or medic or something similar; and at least one or two heavies, to provide security and muscle. Of course, there are endless other possible crew options beyond the basics, passengers, and hirelings of various sorts.
The key, for me, is to get the universe right. So long as we do that, I think that the thematic elements will follow pretty neatly.
Damn, this should be fun.

The gains seen in the Unification War were slowly disappearing, and opportunities for those with the courage, skills and assets to do what was needed, or gain from the opportunities presented, saw many small groups move to fill all manner of niches. Some worked to aid a greater cause; repairing the fractures of the Miranda Scandal, throwing off the oppressive rule of a hated government. A few spoke of raids to Miranda to reclaim a wealth of items that have been lying around untouched due to the overwhelming numbers of Reavers, who had now been culled somewhat.

If I'm captain I want the KittyCat as pilot

Nono, my concern was that we'd have a dozen players![]()
That would not be hard to achieve, seeing as how many people have expressed interest. But I think we're at a pretty good number. Woo!
Also, talked to some people and discussed a Miranda storyline. Here is what we've batted around so far (thanks LCN!):
Okay so we're definitely going with a more comprehensive crew aspect than the show originally starts with, so let's say that we need a good idea for something they'd need from Miranda, if we're pursuing that. A piece of technology? Something cultural? Fuel? Information? It's gotta be something pretty damn important. Information would be interesting. Something that has multiple facets, different drives: They all need it but for different reasons, although that may be too divisive. It could also serve to provide a reason for them to put aside their individual reasons and work for the good of the crew as a whole.
This above conversation is a mash-up of one that we had. Thoughts?
They don't all have to be after the same thing. They all just have to need to get to Miranda

Okay, so, a job on Miranda--someone's paying to get there. Each can have own reasons, or whatever.
The most important thing about this thread is going to be communication, the ties between characters, the connections they have. If we're going with this premise, that they're getting paid to go to Miranda for something--or at least that's the Captain's goal--then we have room to wiggle around. Does that sound like something we can agree on? Am I repeating myself here?![]()
I agree. I don't think you are repeating. I think you are narrowing down a broad idea, which is important. I agree with this idea. One common goal between them, at least for the Captain. But maybe also individual side reasons.
