Fishing

The "black" salmon (Spring or over-winter salmon as opposed to "bright" or summer/fall fish) season will probably have a late start here due to ice and hi water when all this snow FINALLY frigging melts. And we're at least a month and a half before the small mouths will be accessable.

A day or two of fishing would be extremely theraputic right now:(

The Homer Winter King Salmon Derby is this weekend. You have time. Tourney link

I always wanted to fly fish. I took a course at the local college a few years ago and got hooked.

I'm still new at it.

Most of my fly fishing is downtown in the rapids for rainbows, and mostly with just a little orange piece of sponge.

I lived in Montana for 6 years. Outside of Frenchtown is a little creek with huge pot holes. The water was colder than a witches tit but it had some of the beast cutthroat in them.

It's all fun. Just have fun. And don't buy into all of that new crap, just stick to the basic equipment.

I live in what could be the best part of the country for fishing.

And thats why I live here

We don't have everything, but we sure have a pile of different things/species

I had just turned around a bend in a trout stream in Upper Michigan and standing right in fornt of me was one of the most beautiful blonds I had ever seen in my life. She was fully rigged in traditional fly-fishing gear. She shot me this big smile and asked me how I was doing. We swapped some of our thinking on the best flies to use, the weather and how nice it was to get away for a couple of days of fishing. After sitting on the bank, drinking some coffee and just relzxing, we went on her way. I still fish and every time I come around a bend I say a small prayer she might be standing there. Did dumb ass me attempt to find out if she were availasble? Hell no. I was talking fishing and trying not to drool on my vest.....

I'm not too trendy. And I'm hard on gear.

Sorry I missed this. I trash more gear than you can believe.

I helped out on the golden trout project not long ago. You have to catch them, do all sorts of things to these little critters, then release them. This isn't for everyone but the scenery was amazing.

And I still use my old Mitchell 300 from 1968 or so. It's been rebuilt and cleaned countless times, and it still works good.

I still have my Grandfathers rod. (circa 1930-40's?). It's bamboo and I really just look at it. I don't want to use it since it's the only thing of his I have.

I envy the people who make the equipment. It is way more labour intensive than you can imagine. You should get out more often. I can hike for 2-3 days, break out my rod and have some pan fry in a short time.

Not more than I imagine! I've been building rods as a hobby/side job for several years now. Have sold several hundred. It is going to be a nice retirement gig.

I've never fished for any salmon other than Atlantic... and "land locks" which are at best a sub species.

I'm not a great fly fisherman and "brights" can be brook trout esque in their finikieness about presentation. Blacks are usually sooooo hungry that if the fly even vaguely resembles a smelt or minnow they will nail it and the presentation is almost a slow trawl. Smallies with dry flys are a lot of fun however my kit is a little rugged for them. I should consider getting a lighter rod for them... which is just what I need... more stuff:rolleyes::eek:

Now, that would be a hobby someone could into. It's relaxing too, like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. I'm unfortunately, more of a stick, shoelace, safety pin type. Now thats something I can build.

You would be surprised how easy it gets to build rods, after a few dozen. And, a pair of those magnifier glasses, so you can see the threads. I do a little bit of fancy thread work, and that thread is hard to see!

No one can have too many pairs of skis, too many boats, or too many fishing poles.

Winter kings (feeders) are caught by trolling. Ya just throw your herring out and have a beer. Fish or no fish, it's a win-win.

yep
thats when I got mine
my 12th birthday
I still have it sitting on a shelf in my workshop, in fine condition

I think i'll get out and drill a few holes for specs this weekend

imagine, a porn board making you want to go fishing

The fancy threads for custom work is a very nice touch. I would start one of these and have to try them for a day or two. Then how many would I get built?

Depends on the beer and the company.

I'm thinking of a sun warmed bank under an elm in July... a six pack of Stella's some baked ham sandwiches a Carolina rig on the end of my rod and Smallies who aint entirely interested.

And dont encourage me... a morning fishing makes me look like i'm leaving for a month already:eek: Minimum 4 rods and two briefcase size tackleboxes plus all the rest of the gear and creature comforts.

One thing about fly fishing that I appreciate is the simple elegance and the lack of shit to haul:D
