It's frightening how well she knows the twisted equine mind. BlackShanglan said:(No picture, alas; it’s missing.)
I miss this very much, and hope to find it soon, as it is most gratifying in use.
To make:
Go to a hardware or home repair store (where, if you’re me, they will soon some to look at you in peculiar ways) and buy a heavy wooden dowel that fits comfortably in your hand. You’ll be using that for a handle. Also buy a good-sized eyehook screw (screw with a wide ring at the top) and a ball of jute twine – rough, brown twine. Some sandpaper helps, and if you care to finish the handle, whatever finish you like.
Saw the dowel to handle length. Sand the edges smooth. Finish if you wish. Insert the eyehook screw into one end. Then cut equal lengths of twine twice the length you’d like the fall, as many as you think you can tie to the eyehook. Pull each length halfway through the hook and tie to secure. Then, for each half of the fall, tie a double knot about every two inches for the length of the strand. Repeated until your flagellum is as full as you would like it.
Affect: This device has a unique feel and affect. While the twine is light, the hard knots strike much harder than the rest of the strand. It’s remarkably stingy in a very rousing way, and leaves unusual marks – like little red bee-stings all over the back. With a gentle hand, it can be quite painless; with a strong lash, it’s exquisitely painful.
(I really must make another.)
