food recommendations from a stranger in a strange land

Wait. You can put spaghetti sauce on potatoes?

I may have to reevaluate my dislike for Skyline <ponders>

You are my hero.

Minus that whole living in below freezing weather for 300 days out of the year.

I have heat in the house and warm clothes to wear outside.

Today's crock pot sensation is a chunked up beef roast cooked in tomato soup with an onion. Was not my idea, but SWMBO's. I have rice going right now. Dinner will be in about 1/2 - 3/4 hour.

Interesting.

I occasionally take round steaks, beat the shit out of them, and then slowly cook them in tomato sauce on the stove. Throw in some bell peppers and onions and pour over rice.

I like your idea better <scribbles off some notes about dinner next week>

I made carnitas tonight. Wait what..? Carnitas in Alaska? Say it isn't so!

Sure! Because i haven't learned to link yet, Google bacon broccoli salad. Basically it's broccoli, bacon, onions and cheese mixed with a dressing of mayo, sugar, lemon and vinegar. Sometimes raisins are added, some omit the cheese. It doesn't seem like the ingredients would taste good together but they do. The longer it sits in the fridge the better it gets, but almost never lasts long enough to.

swapping the bacon for sunflower seeds isn't bad either. i don't make it with the cheese. now, pea salad comes with bacon and cheese, but that's just how i was raised.

It needed a bit more spice, for me. It was fine, for her. I added some black pepper, chili powder and hungarian paprika. Then, it was quite good. And, it's packed for lunch, tomorrow.

Hominy & grits - wallpaper paste with a bit of beach sand.. BARF!🤢

Butty Dearest... try Memphis BBQ. Bloody marvellous! 😎

Beale Street music clubs are also Amazing!

i cannot wait to try it - lurve me some barbeque

Today's recommendation: after shopping, and before starting on on laying/cementing the 2nd row of blocks, H introduced me to something i'd have never thought of trying! Ritz crackers, with a healthy blob of crunchy (for me, smooth for him) Jif peanut butter and, on top of that, a similar sized blob of Ranch veggie dressing. OH.EM.GEE! i think it's my favourite foodstuff i've put in my face since arriving in america.

The tarragon flavour in Yank ranch dressing is yummy! 😜

Cheese Ritz with peanut butter are pretty good, also.

Peanut butter and ranch.

I have no idea where that came from. It makes no sense!

Yeah, well, just because something is called 'Mexican food' doesn't mean it is.

<goes off and grumbles about all the Peruvian food being called Mexican in DC>

He has a point.
And in addition, there are essentially three types of food under the Mexican lable here in the states (four if we open a classification for not even Mexican).

There is actual Mexican, the sort you can buy from a street vendor south of the border; this is best represented by immigrant owned paradises in strip malls.

Tex-Mex, which is common in the well known chains and is heavily influenced by American tastes.

And "taco hell", which includes all your bad fast food "Mexican".

The best place in San Diego was an old Kodak Photo booth turned walk up dinner near Nimitz and Rosecrans.

i've a hankering tonight for some good old british sausages, mashed potatoes and beans

Bangers 'n Mash! 😎

Keen's mustard, or HP?

didn't have enough of the other potatoes left for mashing, didn't want to use the lovely new ones from the garden, so a change of plan was in order. ended up using up the remains of H's chilli and adding the cooked and cut up sausages to it, then tossed in some cooked rice at the end. was ok. not bangers and mash, tho. and it would have been colman's if there was any left.
