For Those Who Might Be Wondering Why We Might Be In Ukraine

For the first time, Russia’s fuel output in doubt as Ukrainian drones hit three key refineries

Ukrainian drones have recently struck oil refineries operated by major producers Lukoil and Rosneft, raising concerns over Russia’s ability to sustain fuel production. The attacks, which have intensified over the past eight days, targeted three major refineries in central and southern Russia, including facilities operated by industry giants Lukoil PJSC and Rosneft PJSC. The most recent strike occurred on 31 January at Lukoil’s Volgograd refinery, following attacks on the Ryazan and Nizhny Novgorod facilities. The Ryazan refinery, located approximately 120 miles southeast of Moscow, has reportedly halted operations, though the impact of the Volgograd attack remains unclear.

The attacks come as Ukraine intensifies its campaign against Russian infrastructure, targeting not only energy facilities but also ammunition production plants. Ukrainian officials state that their primary objective is to disrupt supplies to the Russian military and reduce the Kremlin’s ability to produce and export oil and fuel, which remains crucial to Russia’s budget.

Zelenskyy: Ukraine received US$76 billion out of US$177 billion approved by America

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has clarified that of the approximately US$177 billion in aid approved by the US for Ukraine, the country has received about US$76 billion.
Well, they ain't gonna get the rest, not while Trump is POTUS.

Well, they ain't gonna get the rest, not while Trump is POTUS.
Maybe as weapons. The cash is not s much an issue. Europe and Japan are fronting up their but its the military equipment and ammo they need.

The EU has talked about buying that from the US themselves for Ukraine. That would be win win.

Ukraine’s new long-range drones capable of round-trip bombing missions

A new type of Ukrainian fixed-wing drone bomber may have targeted a key Russian oil pipeline in a recent attack, Forbes reported on 30 January. The strike, conducted by Ukraine’s 14th Separate Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Regiment, hit a pumping station on the Druzhba pipeline near the Russian-Belarusian border in Russia’s Bryansk Oblast. The Druzhba pipeline, one of the world’s largest, is essential for Russia’s oil industry. The attack led to a fire so intense it was detectable by NASA’s fire-detecting satellites, according to Forbes. Estonian analyst WarTranslated commented on the accuracy of the strike, stating, “Judging by the fire, the strike was precise.”

Historically, Ukraine’s drone strikes on Russian oil facilities have involved drones loaded with explosives that crash into targets. However, Nikolaev Vanek, a popular Ukrainian Telegram channel, noted that the recent strike involved drones that “bombarded the Bryansk Republic with bombs.” The “Bryansk Republic” is a Ukrainian running joke mocking Russia’s fake “republics” in occupied Donetsk and Luhansk.

If confirmed, these new drone bombers represent a significant shift. Rather than single-use missions, they could conduct multiple strikes on refineries or pumping stations before being lost or destroyed. This capability would increase the efficiency and impact of Ukraine’s drone warfare.

Apparently another massive attack on the Lukoil Refinery in Volgograd underway tonight. Already 50!!! explosions reported. Electricity is gone. Videos coming from the Lukoil refinery show a large fire which seems to be bigger than the usual production flaring. The bystanders are saying that the facility is burning. NASA show at least 5 fires

There were 10 explosions in the city around 4 a.m. NASA satellites show massive fires across the complex. One strike took out electricity in several districts of the city.

"More than 15 UAVs flew over the Milyutinsky district towards the Volgograd region. I've already lost count," according to a local resident in the Rostov region of ruzzia

In Taganrog and Millerovo in the Rostov region, air defense is operating. Locals report that 30 UAVs have already been seen in these locations.

The best part of these attacks is where they hit, both fire areas shown are in crude distillation and secondary processing operations areas. Taking out tanks and loading facilities hurts logistics, but taking out unit operations means limiting refining capacity. Given that Lukoil in Kstovo is down, stopping production at Volgograd could cause them to have nearly 70% of Lukoils production capacity offline. Given their current debt level, a hit to cashflow from refined product production could actually kill Lukoil.

I dunno. The way you always describe the war's progress, the Ukes should've taken Moscow by now. But in fact, they have not even won back Crimea.

There is a lot you 'dunno' about combat, Bubba. Just sit your ass down and comment on things you 'think' you know about and let the girl alone. She's doing a good job of filling your head with some good news you don't get on local TV these days about Ukraine.

Stick to comments about what Trump is going to do to MAGA, for instance, if you can find something that isn't insane he has said between golfing events. How many since he took office now? You could report on those.

It's a valid point, because there ARE big problems with the Ukrainian military. About 20% of their units are outstanding - these are the experienced ones that you see in the news again and again - they have good commanders, good unit training and coordination, they're well-equipped, in part thanks to their own ability to fund raise and generate support, and many of them recruit and train their own volunteers and not rely on the ZSU mobilization and training command. Azov is a good example of this.

60% of the units are run of the mill, do the job but often not well, and they take unnecessary losses through lack of attention to detail. Preparation of defense's for example, Inter-unit coordination. Inexperience and lack of training. Lack of support. Shortage of manpower. Shortages of equipment and ammo. Senior officers who are not concerned for their men and command in the Soviet style. Corruption is another issue.

20% of units are just straight out incompetent or fail - often again due to poor officers, the 155th Anne of Kyiv being a classic example.

Another big issue is the Supreme Command. Syrsky’s style of command has and is causing major issues. He's turned out to be a not particularly good commander, often reacting too late, causing needless losses and ignoring issues until they become near-disasters. He's also done far too little, too late, to sort out issues with mobilization and training, and has not addressed incompetent unit command. This, amongst other things, is what is causing issues with mobilization inside Ukraine, alog with outrght corruption and again, incompetence.

The saving grace for Ukraine is that Russia is even more incompetent.

To the absolute horror of Vetteman/RightGuide, who has been predicting the complete collapse of Ukraine on a near-daily basis "within the next few days" (since June 2023!), new strongman Donald J. Trump announced an "agreement in principle" today to swap the output of Ukraine's many lithium mines in return for state-of-the-art American missiles.

The US will receive raw unrefined lithium, which is expected provide an immediate cost advantage to create electric car batteries for RealPresident Elon Musk's failing Tesla EV car system.

In return, the US will provide lethal missiles that have pinpoint laser guidance which will certainly fuck up a Russian military unit's day. (I suspect Ukraine will continue to use drones to kill Russian infantry, and save the shiny new missiles for bigger things like Russian refineries).

A rare "win-win" opportunity for both the US and Ukraine.

Trump was undoubtedly still seething about being cuckolded by Russian despot Vladimir Putin last month (see post 4175). Putin, who "pinky-swore" to do a deal with Trump to end this conflict as soon as he (Trump) won the election, engaged in typical Russian double-cross shenanigans and reneged on the peace plan terms, and instead stabbed his good friend Donald J. Trump in the back by an additional four new "non-negotiable" major concessions as a condition of "peace". This pissed off Trump no little bit, who was forced to hand off the steaming pile of shit remaining from this clandestine deal to Secretary of State, "Little" Marco Rubio.

Nobody, not even RealPresident Elon Musk, carries a grudge more petulantly than Donald J. Trump, though. Trump obviously had payback in mind when he agreed "in principle" to this deal.

It should be pointed out that Trump actually has NO principles, so it remains to see if this deal comes to fruition. Trump gets a finders fee, Musk gets lithium for batteries and Ukraine gets missiles. The only way I see this deal not happening is if Elon gets greedy.

Lit's longtime supporter of Russian despot Vladmir Putin, RightGuide, could not be reached for comment.

The first Dassault Aviation Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets have arrived in Ukraine today,

French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced this on X on Feb. 6. “With Ukrainian pilots on board who have been trained for several months in France, they will now participate in defending the skies of Ukraine,” he wrote without specifying the exact number of aircraft. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said that France plans to equip the Mirage 2000 jets in a way that ensures Ukrainian forces gain aerial superiority over Russian aviation.

According to some French media, Paris has delivered a total of six fighters of this type to Ukraine. Since there is currently no official statement on the matter from the French authorities, the total number of fighters that Ukraine will receive remains classified information. The delivery of these advanced aircraft, paired with the recently supplied SCALP-EG and Storm Shadow cruise missiles, adds a new layer of precision strike capability to Ukraine’s military operations. Both types of missiles, known for their accuracy and ability to hit high-value targets deep behind enemy lines, enable the Ukrainian Air Force to strike strategic locations such as military command centers, ammunition depots, and critical infrastructure without entering heavily defended airspace. This combination of advanced fighters and long-range missiles provides Ukraine with a powerful tool to disrupt Russian military operations and complicate the logistical challenges faced by Russian forces.

The inclusion of the Mirage 2000-5F into Ukraine’s arsenal is a clear shift towards more sophisticated, high-tech military assets that allow for deeper, more strategic strikes. The fighter’s ability to operate effectively at extended ranges, paired with precision-guided munitions, makes it a key player in Ukraine’s efforts to degrade the enemy’s command and control capabilities, thereby improving the operational tempo of its own forces.

Ukraine Announces Successful Use of First Laser Weapon on Battlefield

A Ukrainian military commander has announced the successful use of the country’s first laser weapon on the battlefield, revealing that it has effectively targeted specific objects. No further details regarding the laser weapon’s deployment, including the date and location, were provided. In December 2024, Sukharevskyi confirmed that Ukraine became the “fifth country to possess” such a weapon. The laser weapon is dubbed “Tryzub” (Trident), with a reported operational range of two kilometers (1.24 miles).
The laser weapon’s deployment is a part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to enhance its air defense capabilities, particularly in countering drone threats. It also reflects Kyiv’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge military technology to stay competitive in modern warfare.

Russian troops start receiving donkeys for logistics

Some units of the Russian army began to receive donkeys as pack animals. Photos and videos of the animals were published by a number of Russian Telegram channels.

In particular, the Zhyvov Z channel reported that a donkey was issued to one of the units as a regular logistics vehicle, meaning that the animal did not come to the troops on a volunteer or personal initiative.

End of February - 875,000.
End of March - 900,000
June sometime - 1,000,000 Russians

To the dismay of Russian channels, Ukrainian forces are now advancing in Russia's Kursk region, having entered the town of Fanaseevka. That's a pretty nice advance considering how tough the situation in Kursk has been. Good timing too, with the North Koreans currently removed and the Russians exhausted from their pre-Trump-inauguration push to remove Ukraine from Kursk. Ukraine may be doing this to coincide with the peace summit. If Ukraine advances significantly its going to put russia in a bind.

Russian milbloggers are in an absolute panic. Ukrainian forces have been geolocated south of Kolmakov and in Cherkasskaya Konopelka and Fanaseevka. Russian sources also reported fighting in the area of Kruglenkoe and Ulanok. Take these claims with big grains of salt. The gray area extending into western Ulanok is only out of caution, considering Rybar has mapped it that way. Historically, Rybar "panic and doom" maps are pretty accurate. The Russian Ministry of Defense has officially denied milblogger reports of fighting in Ulanok.

Based on the direction of the assault on Cherkasskaya Konopelka and Fanaseevka, we believe Russian forces were already pushed out of Makhnovka. Ukrainian forces have advanced up to 5 kilometers (geoconfirmed). Russian resistance so far has been drones and artillery; no signs of infantry fighting.

He can't say THIS ain't a quid pro quo!

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Monday indicated that he wants to reach an agreement with Ukraine to gain access to the country’s rare earth materials as a condition for continuing U.S. support for its war against Russia.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump complained that the U.S. had sent more in military and economic assistance to Ukraine than its European partners, adding, “We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they’re going to secure what we’re giving them with their rare earth and other things.”

Trump suggested that he’s received word from the Ukrainian government that they’d be willing to make a deal to give the U.S. access to the elements critical to the modern high-tech economy.

“I want to have security of rare earth,” Trump added. “We’re putting in hundreds of billions of dollars. They have great rare earth. And I want security of the rare earth, and they’re willing to do it.”

It’s Russian Men Against Ukrainian Machines on the Battlefields in Ukraine

Desperately short of infantry, Kyiv is using aerial drones to pick off Russian infantry. It’s slowing, but not stopping, the Russian advance.

POKROVSK, Ukraine—In the flat farmland and shattered mining towns surrounding this eastern Ukrainian city, the war has become mainly a contest between Russian foot soldiers and Ukrainian explosive drones.

After nearly three years of fighting, Ukraine is desperately short on infantry to man the trenches. They are outnumbered at least 5-to-1 along most of the eastern front, and the men they have are mostly older, recently conscripted, and lacking motivation and experience in battle, Ukrainian officers said.

What Kyiv’s forces have in abundance are drones—which Ukraine is now relying on to compensate for the lack of infantry.

Surveillance drones police the 600-mile front line, having all but entirely replaced human reconnaissance. When Russian soldiers advance toward Ukrainian positions, explosive aerial drones are dispatched to pick them off, while larger drones drop bomblets onto them. Infantry fire their weapons only when the occasional Russian soldier manages to slip past the phalanx of unmanned aerial vehicles.

No, there's absolutely no other details. I tried to find anything at all but that little press release was all that was said.
