Kent Loomis strode into the pool party like a male model on the cat walk of a Speedo's fashion show.
He had a reason to walk with such confidence. He was the BMOC at Harper High: he had been President of his class since Freshman year and was currently Harper's Student Body Ambassador to the State Legislature; in four years, he'd lettered at least twice in each of football, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, track and field, and baseball, which was not only a school record but a State record, too; he was a straight A student with 36 college credits already on his transcript and had been accepted at all nine of the colleges to which he'd applied; and he was going steady with the most beautiful woman in the school, a Beauty Queen and magazine model who had just signed a contract with one of New York's largest photo agencies.
And despite the yearning glances from the girls around the pool and the high fives and fist bumps and congrats for this or that from the guys, there was still something missing from Kent's life.
That was when he saw her. He recognized her from school, but he couldn't recall her name. That, of course, was unusual for Kent: he rarely forgot names, particularly of such cute girls he wanted to fuck.
He snagged the open shirt of one of his teammates as he passed by, nodding the girl's way and asking, "Who's that?"
"Freckles?" the other guy asked. "Don't know her name, but ... this is her party."
"Her party?" Kent asked ignorantly.
In addition to being everything above, Kent was a party-oholic, going to any and every get-together he could in an attempt to see and be seen. He heard there was a party at the country club and had come here without knowing what the party was about or for whom it was being thrown. All he'd cared was that it would be pool side where bikinis and shapely bodies would abound.
He glanced around and found decorations that indicated the girl had just turned 18. Then, he glanced about again, looking for his girlfriend only to remember that she was on a shoot in San Diego.
Smiling politely and heading toward Freckles, he stopped just short of her, waited for her to look his way, and said with a wide smile, "Happy birthday. I ... I have to apologize for not bringing a gift. Busy times, you know? But ... if there's anything you would like..."
