I always wondered why his hat maker was allowed to live.

Well...a famous guitar luthier lives in Alpine too and his name is Michael Stevens; he's crafted custom guitars for the likes of Eric Clapton and others and the wait time to get one of his guitars is 6 months--but they have a great reputation and craftsmanship. :)

Back on topic of hats: Tilley! :D

Yes, but the Ventures crushed it. I heard both of them and the original drum solo was so incredibly lame compared how the Ventures took it to a new galaxy.

I don't agree.
Listening tonight to both [recorded] versions (on You tube), the drum sets were different (the surfaris set is deeper), but played with skill in both.

When I was attending my alma mater, one of the other drummers talked ad nauseum about his ability to play that. At one football game, without warning, they headed over to play it at the "Student Section". Others tried to follow seconds later, & section leader stopped them saying, "We're going to feature a Freshman tonight."

As the only other Freshman in the section, I walked over & started cymbal "chokes". IMO, whoever would not have created sets &/or separate cymbals if they didn't want both used the majority (if not all) of the time.
