Free Levi Johnston

By the way, I have seen Bristol Palin on the stage with her mother and siblings. She is a real hotty, and sharing a bed with her every night is certainly not the worst thing in the world.

Talking about the hypocrisy of Palin's abstinence-only sex education views in light of her pregnant teenage daughter's delicate condition... THAT'S not okay...

But calling her daughter a hottie and saying you wouldn't mind fucking her... THAT'S okay!?

I thought the candidate's kids were "off-limits"?

This is not a political thread. BYW, I have seen a good many posts about the sex appeal, or lack of same, of Michelle Obama.

Besides that, I just commented on Bristol sharing a bed with her husband.

I was thinking about this today. I mean, this must really suck, right? You get some girl preggers either because she told you she was on birth control and you believed her, or you were too stoned to remember the condom and the fact that she believes in abstinence as the only form of B.C....anyway, whoops and now you're looking at fatherhood and child support. That's bad enough. But then she's also the daughter of the Governor! Yikes, that's bad, but hey, it's a sparsely populated state; the woman's not *that* powerful, right?

Then, suddenly, that Gov. is nominated as V.P. for the Republican party! OMG! The whole power and might and enormous conservative money machine descends on you and there ain't no way they're gonna let you get out of making that daughter an honest woman! (or making sure that you behave yourself!)

Now you're looking at being a dad, a husband and son-in-law to (maybe) the next VP or President of the U.S.! And you're left praying that McCain doesn't win because if he does, you are soooo screwed!

Poor guy. I have a suspicion I know who he's gonna vote for, if only to drop this nightmare back down to unpleasant dream.

You, know, there are many stand-up young men who want to do the right thing and marry the girl. When I was 18, that's what I would have wanted to do. Of course, that was a long time ago, and public attitudes were different then.

Perhaps he would have wanted to marry her even if he hadn't knocked her up.

BTW, did you see that short flurry a couple of years back about the double-muscled baby that was born in

"BERLIN —

His parents are from East Berlin no doubt.

I did that. Of course it was just a case of getting married before we graduated instead of afterwards. Can't say as I have any complaints worth mentioning.

We are never going to know that. Not now.

Really, it's not the point. The point is not what choice he would have made or will make.

It's that he even gets a choice. Or, rather, that he won't get a choice. That is the entire point, that a person should make such an important decision about what happens to them for the rest of their life themselves, not have it be made for him by politics.

Gee. I wonder what else that could apply to?

He does have a choice. He can choose to marry her or not. And, of course, he had a choice to use a condom or abstain entirely, but that last choice would have been really hard for an 18 yo to make. I know I would not have made it at that age, but I would have used a condom.

Yes, he could have used a condom. The fact that his girlfriend's mother preaches abstention would not have changed that. I'm assuming that everybody acted of their own free will. If Bristol was willing to fornicate, using a condom would not have been much of a further step.

BTW, the only thing I am finding fault with is that some people believe abstention is the only way of birth control.

Yet you're willing to vote for people who believe exactly that.

Sometimes hypocrisy knows no bounds.

He does have a choice. He can choose to marry her or not.

No, he doesn't. That choice has been taken away from him.

Apparently, you believe that the most aggressive and forsworn organization involved in the multi-billion dollar fight over the single most powerful political position in the world is unwilling or unable to engage in a behavior to browbeat an eighteen year-old neophyte.

Or you are unwilling to believe it because it would force you to rexamine some of your own points of view.

People kill for a lot less than what is at stake here. They don't even think twice about it.

They are not going to even bat a VP candidate eyelash about manipulating a "redneck kid" with just about whatever it takes. That could be something that ends up a net positive for Levi. Money, wine, women, song. Or it could be negative.

But to think that Levi really has the availability to speak his mind, let alone act on his thoughts, is extremely naive.

I'm aware there will be a lot of pressure, but he can still choose to refrain from marrying her. He may have to leave the state, but it can be done. By the way, do you believe "the most aggressive and forsworn organization involved in the multi-billion dollar fight over the single most powerful political position in the world" will be able to browbeat all the 18 year olds into voting for them?

I've always thought a "redneck" was a poor southern white man, and that it was axctually a racial/cultural slur.

I've also heard something to the effect that he has posted something to the effect that he doesn't want to get married but I have never seen it. Has anybody here seen it?

Before it was taken down (reported in the NYPost):

On his MySpace page, Johnston boasts, "I'm a f - - -in' redneck" who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes.

"But I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some s- - - and just f - - -in' chillin' I guess."

"Ya f - - - with me I'll kick [your] ass," he added.

He also claims to be "in a relationship," but states, "I don't want kids."

I did see it... briefly. It was actually there. Before it disappeared.

As Selena pointed out, I used "redneck" as a reference to the fact that he self-describes that way.

And there is a huge difference between gaining votes and controlling the "future son-in-law" of the VP candidate.

A more relevant comparison would be the future son-in-law of the CEO of Phillip Morris discovers documents proving that cigarettes cause lung cancer. (The year is, say, 1959) What will Phillip Morris do to "save" the company????

Think that kid would have a chance to go public???

That is the kind of stakes and the kind of people being dealt with here. This isn't City Council. And political power is about the only thing that equals money at the level being discussed.

There won't have to be any pressure. He's eighteen, for God's sake. That YouTube was just adolescent smoke blowing. A kid with the brainpower he shows will be so easy to coopt it won't be funny. Wait until he sees what he can have in life besides the girl and he'll be putty in hands. No stick, just carrot.

Agreed... though it may seem a disaster, the truth is the kid is set for life. He just needs to stay married. Anything else he does will be swept under the table.

But to think that he has a choice? That is just blind.

There's a lot of that blindness going around these days.

If McCain/Palin lose, then Levi can do whatever the hell he wants.

But if they win the presidency, they'll bring out the shotgun wedding kit.

When Dick Gregory wrote his autobiography, the name of it was "Nigger" and he referred to himself that way, which is his right. However, If I were to refer to him by the same term, there would be cries of rage, and I would be called all sorts of names. On his Myspace, or whatever it was, the young man refers to himself using a certain word that is usually a racial slur, and it is alright. But, that does not mean that everybody can use it.

BTW, I have no reason to believe the kid will not do the right thing. If that had not been his intention, he would not have been on the stage at the RNC. He may have said a year or so ago that he did not want kids, but he will almost certainly change his mind. Almost all men do.

I do believe that the wedding will be set at the time most advantageous to the McCain/Palin campaign. That may be after the election to avoid distractions to the mother of the bride, but it will certainly be no later than November.

As for the Phillip Morris thing, the kid would probably not tell anybody about it, because the knowledge would make him a dangerous person to PM. Or, he might release the info to some Rachel Carson/Ralph Nader type who would release it with a greast deal of fanfare. Or he might blackmail the company, which could be a very dangerous thing to do.

If Dick Gregory can use the word nigger because he's black than certainly someone white wearing a cowboy hat in their AV can use redneck.*** Talk about double standards. Plus, I was born in Anchorage. So I certainly have as much right to use that word as Levi does.

And the fact that "the kid would probably not tell anybody about it, because the knowledge would make him a dangerous person to PM." is EXACTLY the point, Box.

The kid is dangerous to the McCain ticket. How did you not get that?

Because he is impossibly naive and gullible to have reached the age he has. He must have thousands of guardian angels....honestly.

I think we can pretty much agree that even if he's changed and is honestly stepping up to the plate to do the right thing, an 18 year old former hockey-player cum pothead can't really be trusted to know what he wants or what kind of dad he'll be. It's not beyond the pale to say that. likely, both these kids have some growing up to do and both pregnancy and a shot-gun wedding may not be the right thing for either of them.

What I think is important is that our boy there got as lucky as he could be given the circumstances. As VM pointed out, I'm sure there were plenty of carrots along with the sticks and if this situation is lemons, well, the lemonade made from them ain't so bad.

The problem, however, is that the vibe offered in this situation is pretty much this: so long as they marry, everything hunky-dory. But not every teenage girl is going to have those carrots to keep the guy who gets her preggers. In other circumstances, this teenage girl might end up a single mom, or the two of them wed but are unable to support the child given their poor paying, teen jobs and so go on welfare. What I mean is, I'm all for saying this is their business, not ours. But many of the same people arguing that this teen marriage is right are the same ones who would condemn the girl if she couldn't get the boy to marry her, or if the new, young couple couldn't earn enough with their teen jobs to support the baby and had to go on welfare.

And, certainly, in other instances, the teens would not have this cushion allowing them to be both new parents and yet still, maybe, be what they want to be. Putting it another way, I don't think teen pregnancy should be viewed as fine and dandy, as "problem solved" so long as the kids marry.

I'm fully in agreement. We had both our parents support to get us through college and then I went into the Army. It was rather a while before I could get a steady well-paying job after that to support my family. We were frugal and lucky, especially lucky in that our families didn't have fits and dump us. Things have changed greatly and I wouldn't trade in two great kids for anything, even if the first one was 'a little early'. That should not be taken as suggesting my life as a general rule!

I'm unsure how you you mean that. We all know that members of a group, who are sometimes known by epithets can use such epithets among themselves, but outsiders should not do so. That is why Dick Gregory could name his autobiography the way he did, but you and I could never call him by that name, nor should even black people who don't know him.

There is a group of motorcyclists called Dykes on Bikes, and they ride in the Gay Pride Day parade in San Francisco. I would never be perermitted to call them dykes, nor would very many other people. There is a militant gay organization called Queernation, but nobody outside the group should be allowed to speak of queers.

I used to resent being called a wino by "citizens" although being called that by another wino was perfectly alright, and I would call them the same thing. Of course, we were SO marginal that nobody cared what we were called.

"Redneck" is also a racial slur and, although Levi Johnston and his buddies can call themselves by that epithet, other people should not. These slurs I have mentioned are all the same kinds of thing. They are all intended to damage the persons at whom they are aimed.

Where is the double standard? The same rules apply to ALL groups, including those I haven't mentioned.

I still don't see just why the kid is dangerous to anybody. Bristol Palin is pregnant, and he is the man who impregnated her. This is extremely well known. I'm pretty sure he will marry her, if she wants to get married, judging from his presence at the RNC. However, if he chooses NOT to do so, there is not much to be done about it. A lot of pressure can be brought against him, and that is probably already happening, but he cannot legally be forced into marriage, nor can Bristol Palin. As for taking some kind of deadly vengeance, I can't see that either. If he suddenly disappears because he gets out of Dodge or because he is deep in an ice crevasse, it would be all the same.

Of course, I think the resolution will be a wedding in November. The election will have been decided and Sarah can be the Mother of the Bride and governor of Alaska while planning her move to Washington DC. The demands on the VP-elect are pretty minimal, although she will need to get up to speed on the latest in WashDC.
