Mergers have eliminated competition and increased input costs in industrialized agriculture.
Almost all of the ranchers in my region are hardcore GOP voters, and almost all of them have been taking massive government subsidies in one form or another for decades, during both GOP and Democratic administrations.
The wildlands conservationist, Edward Abbey, was from this same region. Up until his death he was vilified by local ranchers for speaking out against welfare ranching. Abbey was right, and these ranchers will now accept any goverment handout they can get as a result of the Pig fucking up the beef market.

I've ranched for years, (cow-calf).... there has never been a federal subsidy for ranchers in my area so I call bullshit on your statement of ranching subsidy and Trump did not "fuck up the beef industry"
As of last wensday at the sale barn 600 weight calves brought 4-5 dollars a pound, I've never made this kind of money on any fucking democrat watch.. as a reminder gasoline is $1.98 in Denver and under 3 dollars in my area....all on Trump’s watch.......... fyvm.....

If you are not taking taxpayer money for NRCD "grants", not grazing on public and state lands for ridiculously low taxpayer-subsidized rates, and not lobbying along with cattlegrower associations for other forms of government handouts, then perhaps you are one of the exceptions that I occasionally see in Arizona.
Where I live and work, the vast majority of ranchers lobby for and grab handouts every year for decades, no matter which party controls government.
The only exceptions in my area are smaller operations that are taking advantage of more local value-added markets.

bailouts, especially insufficient ones, won't do anything much for the farmers beyond keeping the wolves temporarily from their doors... bailouts won't reinstate the lost markets the farmers sell to. I would be surprised to see countries who made new arrangements with Canada, Mexico etc..., suddenly backtrack and renew trade agreements with such an unstable partner the USA has become under trump.

I worked as a producer in a community ag cooperative for years. We developed local value-added, and some retail markets in the Southwest. Most of us made a decent living, because of those consistent markets, resisting the urge to get overextended, and keeping our expenses low.
I agree that large scale farmers working in wholesale markets are getting squeezed out because they can't control costs or wholesale markets under this unstable administration.

Your major objection to help farmers seems to be that they don’t deserve the aid since most of them voted for Trump, definitely a sin that is hard to rectify. But as I said farmers are essential; one needs to eat to survive. Perhaps you can be big enough to absolve them of their sin so you can enjoy their products unburdened by their politics.
