Gardening: Plants, Flowers, Veggies, Trees and All Things Green

Our garden is done for now. I kept the colorful pillows out there to give me some interest, but the fountain froze over, so I had to bring it in. Only four more months and things start growing again. Can’t wait!

What I like about January is getting all of the cool gardening and seed catalogs.

We’ve had poor pumpkin crops for the last two years, so I’m gonna buy a bunch of heirloom seeds this year. See if it’s the seeds, the soil or maybe a pest.

Pumpkins sucked this year. Changing some of the crops this year so I don't waste so much space

So it’s January. Time to look thru the seed catalogs and plan and dream.

Last year and the year before we had really poor pumpkin crops. I’m going to buy brand new heirloom seeds to see if the problem where the seeds we were using, or if there’s some issue with the soil, or possibly disease…

The last few years, we’ve been smashing pumpkins and getting the seeds from them….

We sell pumpkins on our farm and really have not been doing very well the last few years… a lot of the pumpkin plants would flower and start pumpkins, but then they were wither before the matured.

Our pumpkins flowered, but no pumpkins past 2 years. Off next week so I don't lose vacation time and going to re- work garden. Going to do some different veggies and less vines.

Decrease in bees noticed?

Decrease in bees noticed?
No, there were tons of bees. Honeybees, bumbles and even wasps and hornets and stuff.

But the last two years I used recycle seeds from squished pumpkins. We’ll see - we’re gonna do a scientific test.

  1. I’m going to plant some with recycled seeds
  2. Another bed with brand new seeds, but I won’t do anything to the soil
  3. Another bed with brand new seeds, and I will amend the soil…

We get a false spring in February, then it frosts again and kills the buds

We get the same thing about a month later. It’s a shame the last four or five years in a row, the beautiful magnolia trees have bloomed only for a cold frost to kill all the buds. 😕

They such beautiful trees and flowers….

It’s seed catalog time. Many have arrived for Mrs wonderer.

I’ve had bad pumpkins for a few years so I am gonna get the highest quality seeds I can. Same for sunflowers and Hungarian Broom Corn.

Looking at seeds and wanting to try some different varieties this year. Was 76 other day, 56 yesterday, 68 today. Mother nature in a bind. Lol
I’d take some of that warmer weather tho.

We went to Punxsutawney over the weekend, and saw the groundhog and engaged in the festivities.

It was fun, but he saw his shadow so six more weeks! We are currently getting an ice storm and everything is glazed over and ice. I can’t even open up my truck doors.

Glad I'm not the only one counting down the days! England has been absolute maximum of 50 for months. Ugh!

Next weekend though. Next weekend I'm getting started no matter what the weather 😂🍃🌿
